Everytime I turn on the camcorder, the screen displays the phrase "disc access." I tried taking the disc out, but it won't even let me open the thing that holds it. The button that says "access" above the button that opens the disc holder constantly flashes. I'm not sure if that has to do with anything. The camcorder will not record anything and it has been like this for a while.
We had the same problem with disc error and the dvd not opening. After reading solution one, my husband tried holding the reset button, after taking of the battery, for about 20-30 sec. and it still didn't work. He tried again, but held the reset button down for just over a minute and we were able to get the dvd out and play our video.
BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! This recorder work great for a few days but gave me a disk error on the 4th day.I lost everything from that day because it would not finalize the disk.So maybe it was the disk (trying benefit of the doubt). However now it stays stuck on ‘DISK ACCESS’.I called Hitachi and was told I have to go to St Louis to get it fixed.I live in Kansas.I ask to make a complaint and was given the run around. They need to open a file, they asked A LOT of questions regarding my address, full name, numbers, etc (not all actually needed to get an address so I can write a complaint letter. Then I get transferred to a rude woman (I wasn’t even told I was getting transferred) who tells me there are only 6 authorized businesses who can work on the camera because they go through intensive training. This does not change anything about me trying to make a complaint. She said she would make a note of this.HA!I then asked for a confirmation number, she went crazy - assuring me the complaint would be taken care of.(Sure!).She finally gave me a case number.I told her I was going to call back to check if it was really a case number attached to this situation. This pushed her over the edge. The call did not end well and I did call back to find Hitachi’s notes on this situation were few and more about me being a problem instead of the camera.BEWARE!
You will need to reset the camera. Turn off the camera, unhook the battery or power supply, then press the reset button with a pen for several seconds. This will completely reset the camera and clear the error. I had to do this yesterday with mine. You may want to download a operations manual. That's where I found the answer.

your camcorder unit uses a lens cap as a cover.so basically when you
turn it on it should be ready to take the video right away. i am sure
your able to see the display indicators and access the menu settings. if
get a black screen and viewfinder when recording, and can record audio
and playback previous tapes you've recorded then that would mean your
cam has an problem with the imaging sensor. you can try to press the
reset button (located near the left side of the battery and display
buttons) while cam is on. or do power reset by turning cam off and
removing the battery and ac adapter (do this for at least a minute). if
your still having this problem, unit will require repair (but if you
don't want to replacement would be another option).
does the unit display what it's pointed at on its display screen or on the viewfinder? if the unit will play a disk but not record the problem may be in the lense or the video sensor. Check if the autofocus operates by running your hand across the front of the unit. if the autofocus knob or lever doesn't turn it may be the power. otherwise it may not operate with -R but only with +R disks?
