On start-up the green start button comes on, and hear the sound of the cooling fan and with-in a second or two a sound comes from the disk drive and then complete shut down. This all takes place in 4 to 5 seconds.
This happens on battery and AC power.
Computer is about 18 months old.
I've removed the battery and re-inserted it...just the same
Tried to start on AC only with the battery removed and get no start-up at all.
Any and all help is appreciated.

a friend had same issue , i dissembled laptop and found a burnt diode chip beneath where power button sits on top cover panel there are two clips under power button , one of the clips shorted the diode , only orange power button would lit up on front edge of lower case
The problem is well known witht this model Toshiba - the problem is the fan stops working and then hence shuts down to prevent overheating - it does not take long once the laptop is hot. Without replacing the fan just reboot the laptop until you hear the fan start again on reboot.
