Ok ready to stand on your head under the dash?
It's doable... there is a flange connected to the gearshift lever under the steering column. If you remove the lower dash cover where the fuses are, you should be able to see it when you move the gear shift lever... look around on the floor of the truck to see if you dropped a star-headed bolt or two... these bolts worked loose on my superduty and made shifting very difficult..it was an easy fix... let me know how you do on it.

check that you have installed the gear lever in the shift rail when you refitted the lever tower on top of the box

Shift lever


Possibly the lever's locking bolt thread has stripped or the thread on the bolt is worn. Another aspect is the splines in the lever are shot and/or the splines on the gear change shaft are badly worn. Remove lever and check the splines on both shaft and lever also check around the lever fixing section for any cracks. Check the threaded section of the lever with a brand new bolt the bolt should be easy to turn in and out by finger and should have no side to side play. When refitting the existing lever or a new one make sure the lever is a good fit on the gearbox shaft splines before you tighten the bolt.

There are three posibilities for this worn linkage on the gearbox the linkage under gear lever or a broken mounting on the bracket where the lever comes up through the floor as long as you can get all gears it will be exturnal linkage fault.

1983 camaro turn signal switch installation


What I remember is a black plastic part in the side of the switch that the lever snaps into. You may need to get a new switch.
You can look at one in a parts store to see if yours is missing anything.

After replacing drive belt, [954-0467], my troy bilt bronco won't fully stop, and the transmission control lever is difficult dto shift. When I turn off the ignition brake functions and shift lever...


The new belt is too tight.Look for an adjustment on the control lever or tension pulley.If that wont fix it.Remove the belt and take it to a NAPA.They can make you a new belt just 1/8 inch longer.I have had to do that with an old mower I had.

The 4 wheel drive shifter is broken. How does the linkage to the transfer case come apart?


Shift Lever NOTE: Remove the shift ball only if the shift ball, boot or lever (7E067) is being replaced.
Removal
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist and position suitable safety stands under vehicle.
  1. Prior to removing the control lever assembly (7E069), be sure the shifter is in the 2H position.
  1. Loosen (do not remove) the nut retaining the shift handle (7E067) to the control lever assembly (7E069). Remove the shift handle (7E067) from the control lever assembly (7E069).
  1. Remove the vent hose (7D494) from the notch in the detent plate.
  1. Remove the control rod (7A315) from the control lever assembly (7E069). ani_caut.gif CAUTION: When removing the control rod (7A315) off the control lever assembly (7E069), do so very gently so as not to damage the control lever assembly.
  1. Loosen (do not remove) the large pivot bolt holding the control lever assembly (7E069) to the detent plate.
  1. Swing the control lever assembly (7E069) out of the way and remove the two bolts (39129-S2) retaining the detent plate to the transmission extension housing. Remove the entire control lever assembly from the vehicle.
Installation
  1. Prior to installing the control lever assembly, be sure the transfer case link (7B106) is in the 2H position (pointing upward).
  1. Install the two bolts (39129-S2) to retain the control lever assembly (7E069) to the transmission extension housing and tighten to 92-125 Nm (68-92 ft-lb). Refer to the following illustration for bolt hole application.
  1. Attach the control rod (7A315) to the control lever assembly (7E069).
  1. Tighten the large pivot bolt to 92-125 Nm (68-92 ft-lb).
  1. Attach the vent hose (7D494) into the notch in the detent plate so the white mark is flush to the outside surface of the plate.
  1. Install the shift handle (7E067) into the control lever assembly (7E069). Tighten the retaining nut to 27-38 Nm (20-28 ft-lb).
  1. Check transfer case for proper shifting and operation.

Stuck in 4 wheel high lock


I had the same problem just yesterday. My shifter lever for the 4x was just flopping around. I crawled under the driver side right behind the driver front tire and there was a lever hanging down with an "L" shape on the end of it and a groove cut all the way around it. That lever is the end of that shifter lever inside of your vehicle. it attaches to another lever "a flat bar with a hole drilled into it and mounted to the side of the transmission. Don't attempt to move the flat bar but do reposition the lever inside the vehicle so that you can put the "L" shaped lever back into the hole of the flat bar. There is supposed to be what they call an "E" ring on the end of this "L" shaped lever that slips over the shaft in that Groove I was telling about. it snaps into place and holds the two levers together. It's missing so go to auto parts store and get a new one. I'm headed there today. Shift your car into 2wd and drive. Then replace the "E" ring that's missing and you're good to go.
