Question about Maxtor OneTouch II Hard Drive

1 Answer

Disappears from system

This drive is connected by firewire to a Dell XPS. It has functioned well for about 18 mos. Suddenly the password protected sign on window failed to appear. The blue light still glows. Without the sign on window I cannot access the drive.

How do I use the password protection?

Your questions isn't too specific but I hope this helps

There are several ways to incorporate password protection. You can set the computer to require a boot up password in the computer BIOS. You have to enter the computer BIOS as soon as you turn it on; with a Dell press [F2], with HP press [Esc] and select system configuration. In the BIOS you can set the BIOS Administrator password - controls the ability to change BIOS settings, the computer boot password - when enabled it requires the user to enter the bootup password before the computer will boot, and set the hard drive access password - controls the users ability to access a hard drive.

The next level of password protection is at the operating system level - account access levels, privilege levels, and passwords. Dependent of operating system you can also set hard drive encryption

I have a new Dell xps 18 and was wondering if the windows logo on the bezel is supposed to give a swooshing sound when touching it.. this didn't happen yesterday when I bought it...

Windows sounds are optional items that can be turned on and off in the Control Panel. That swooshing sound is one of those options, so this can be normal depending on how things are set up. If it did not happen yesterday but does today, then that could be because yesterday the computer had not fully "unpacked" itself from the "new from factory" state but has completed that process by now or it could be that you unknowingly changed an option or installed a program that modified the Windows sound configuration to include this sound. In any case, it is nothing that is causing harm and can be turned off if you wish by going into the Control Panel.

Have a dell latitude D620 that is password protected in such a way as to prevent even the F2 and F12 keys to function. Can you supply a way around this please

You may have a USB keyboard that is not recognized by the BIOS on powerup, but is later recognized by Windows when that starts running. Try connecting a keyboard with a PS2 connector, enter F2 on startup and set the BIOS to enable USB devices in BIOS. If this still doesn't work, then keep a PS2 keyboard around in case you ever need to activate F2 or F12.
