Problems with the battery and the flash on my canon powershot A530

I put new batteries in my canon powershot A530 digital camera, and I go to take pictures in the auto mode. I get the orange light like the flash is coming on, but it won't take pictures. Also, it keeps giving me the low battery light even though I put brand news battery in it. When we looked on the canon website it said that it sounded like the flash wasn't charging. What would be causing this? Thanks for your help!

I cleaned the battery terminal with some alcohol on the inside and the outside Where the battery makes contact, and then I took a small thin object and pressed very gently on the areas where the battery makes contact, and as soon as I turned the camera on, I did not receive the low battery light any longer. I even took about ten pictures, and the light still didn't come on. Thanks again for your help!

I have the same problem with the Canon A530 - I can put in new batteries (fresh out of the pack) and I get the message low battery or change batteries - when I do get to make a few pictures they turn out really fuzzy - Canon has not been able to help. I sent it back within the warranty period they did not repair - now I have sent it back to them again and they tell me my charge will be $97.00 - Can you help - I don't want to pay this since the first time I sent it in it was under warranty. I spoke with someone at Canon who was really had a smarty attitude- I did not appreciate.

Know this is an old post but... Some of The Canon Powershot A530 and A540 cameras are subject to an advisory recall. Seems that a small spring on the battery compartment door can short out the batteries. Suspect this of yours, in that you mentioned that your batteries weren't lasting long. If your camera is on the list, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Hi, On another brand/model of a digicam, a similar problem was fixed by cleaning the battery terminals/contacts. The ends of the terminals that pushes on the battery were partially corroded hence the batteries were not getting full contact. They were cleaned by scraping off the corrosion and applying a strong solvent using cotton buds. Further, they were bend a little to add more pressure to the batteries. If the above does not work, it is possible that the flash charging circuitry is defective and drawing much power than it should normally be. Try operating the digicam with the flash off. If this likewise is a "no joy", perhaps your camera would need the services of a qualified professional. Hope this be of some idea/help. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

CANON POWERSHOT A530 LOW BATTERY READING

Alicia,
Mentioned on my blog that the last paragraph of the advisory states:

""PowerShot A530 and A540 digital cameras affected by this phenomenon will be repaired free of charge, regardless of warranty status. Accordingly, if the opening/closing spring on the inside of the battery cover of your PowerShot A530 or A540 digital camera sticks out, please do not use the camera. Instead, please contact a Canon call center (1-800-OK-CANON) at your earliest convenience."

But also mentioned that if they don't help, a temporary fix is to insulate the spring from the battery contact plate. Merely place a small piece of tape between the portion of spring that's sticking out and the metal battery contact plate.

Finally, make sure you're using rechargeable NiMH batteries rated 2500 mah or better. Digital cameras just use too much power for standard alkaline batteries.

sounds like the flash isn't charging, as the flash icon flashes while the flash is charging before letting you take the photo. Put it in "P" and disable the flash and see if it'll let you take a photo. G>
