Question about HP StorageWorks 18 Ultrium 460 Autoloader (aa927a#aba) Ultrium Tape Drive
PC: Dell GX series- 2 gig ram - OS- WIN XP PRO SP3 (all updates) AMD processor
SCSI Card - adaptec 29320LPE
SCSI ID'S - CARD=7, TAPE=5, AUTOLOADER=4
SCSI Cable: approx 3 mtrs...came with tape unit
Drive setup as sequential, and has ip address asigned
all slots loaded slot1=cleaner tape; 2-16=data tapes (hp ultrium 400)
Able to acess drive via Browser and IP; able to perform diaganostics on unit from tape console or via Browser IP access
Installed latest xp drivers for card and tape
Removable Storage service disabled on pc; if set to auto or manual, pc freezes imediately upon boot into windows
Boot pc: Check scsi settings at initial boot; card, autoloader and tape are recognized
boot into windows: device manager displays card and tape
Run HP Tape and diag toolset; initial IO scan finds the autoloader and tape (highlites in lt blue); selecting the tape displays msg "accessing tape library", the pc freezes in 60 sec.
Installed and ran an HP Windows utilty in gui mode (can run in gui or command line modes) to update tape firmware...firmware was successfully updated; able to view mesges on both pc and tape unit indicating the update was in process and then complete
Move data tape from slot 2 to drive - via tape console
Attempt to run Windows backup....program sees device.. select test folder on c drive to backup...backup attempts to start....then freezes pc in 60 sec.
The fact that device manager sees the card and the tape and the fact that HP Tape diag sees them as well coupled with the successfull firmware update to the tape unit via the HP pc program indicates to me that there is no communication problem via the card, cable, or tape device. ...I'm thinking a software or windows services problem...or possibly the AMD processor...
Any Thoughts ?
Had same issue:
try manualy clean the drive. Check that the drive has no problems reading and writing.
computer freezes because state of 1 of the tapes is lost. the sofware can't deal with that

I have to admit this is a tough one. You seem to have tried most things i would try 1st.
I would suggest trying to download an eval coy of another backup program such as backup exec 12.5 from the symantec website and trying that.
This enables you to eliminate the backup software from your enquiries and if you also enable BUEX to use its own drivers (rather than the standard windows drivers) then that is another thing eliminated.
http://www.trilan-it.com/ are pretty good near the Berkshire area if you need a field call to help sort the issue but i would try BUEX 1st as that will help diagnose the problem even if you dont wish to continue with their software
