You say what it could possibly be, but not how to solve the problem. You state "if it is an automatic defrost it could be the defrost timer or the defrost heater" Camn't you tell from the model number what the features are? Whether is is an autamatic defrost or not? Also you did not address the issue of the water dispenser.

Hi dnana1055,
Fix - Dispenser Motor is frozen
There are many solutions :)
1. Turning up the temp and leaving the door open for a little while got the water flowing.
2. Usually it's a frozen line somewhere. See if you can trace the lines and hit it with a hair dryer.

Before this make sure there is nothing wrong with the water flow.I believe that fine as you have mentioned ice formation is there , However behind the coils.
Thanks for using Fixya.
Do rate the solution.

There are 3 possible reason for this...
Your door isn't sealing tight, causing warm air to get into the fridge which makes the moisture build up and freeze onto the coil.
If it is an automatic defrost type, there is a problem with the defrost timer or the defrost heater.
Or it could be low on refirgerant, which will cause the coil to freeze up.

I have a GE refrigerator with ice and water dispenser. At times a stringy, slimy substance will pass through the water dispenser. I have changed filters, but it still happens . Any thoughts?

Inside the refrigerator is a coil of plastic tubing. It's purpose is to chill the water for the dispenser. The only way to clean this is to run a lot of water through it. I use a gallon container and fill it several times. If you get the same condition in your ice, then I'd install an external water filter in the water line behind the refrigerator.

I HAVE A WHIRLPOOL SIDE X SIDE MODLE # ED5RHEXNL 03 MAKES ICE BUT NO WATER FLOW.

There is a double or triple water valve in your fridge. check continuity on the water dispenser valve coil in the back of the fridge (small terminals, thicker tubing, green coil). Replace valve (part number 4389177) if no continuity. If ok, check if there's line voltage (110-120V) to that coil when the dispenser actuator is pressed. If there is power and there is continuity on that coil - water line is frozen inside the freezer door. Turn off and defrost the refrigerator for full 24 hours. put towels under the freezer door to catch melting ice formed from condensation inside the door. repeat every year or as necessary.

If no power to the water valve coil - check the switch actuated by the water lever in the dispenser assembly. Replace if faulty. Regular microswitch is ok, but if you want the OEM part number, there it is: 2162361

Good luck!

Refrigerator Freezer has ice forming in the bottom inside freezer section. It appears to be leaking down the back inside compartment. The top section has an ice maker and water dispenser but I haven't had...

I believe you just described a defrost condensate blockage that is causing the leaking. There are many reasons for this happening for example water leaking from a water supply line for the dispenser or ice maker, a in the defrost pan, water leaking and draining through the refrigerator cabinet, but most are caused by a defrost drain line blockage. Below is a link that may be helpful so try to take it all in and use the parts that most refer to your specific problem, Thanks Sea Breeze

Water keeps pooling on the second shelf in the refrigerator, and I can not find the source.

Water collecting inside a fridge (that doesn't have a water dispenser in the fresh food compartment) is usually a sign of a clogged tube that directs water collected during the defrost cycle of the freezer coil. The defrost heater melts frost / ice that collects on the coil and water drips into a pan directly under the coil in the freezer compartment. The pan has a tube that allows the water to flow into a pan at the bottom of the fridge, where it is generally evaporated by the heat of the compressor.

You'll have to access the coil and pan (probably behind the back wall of the freezer - but check your model first!) and clear the obstruction from the tube. It is not uncommon for bacteria, mold, etc to grow in the tube. After clearing with a blunt flexible snake - run 4 - 6 ounces of a 10% bleach 90% water mixture to kill any growths remaining in the tube.

Sometimes, ice can form in the top inch or two of the tube, too. A turkey baster can be used to direct hot water into the tube to quicken the thaw process.

If there is water dispensing in the fridge, check all lines and filters in the compartment for spits, cracks and leaks. Repair / replace parts as needed.

Do not perform these steps with the power on!

I hope this helps!

Our fridge is a little over 6 years old and everything has worked fine until now. Earlier in the day I was able to fill up a glass of water no problem but now no water is coming out of the dispenser. The...

Usually that is from the water line freezing up. Behind your refrigerator drawers there is either a plastic tank or a coil of plastic tube........That is where the water runs so your dispenser puts out chilled water. If your fridge gets too cold that will form ice inside and stop the water from flowing. You can defrost it with a hair dryer or just let the fridge sit open for a few hours. Another thing could be the water valve. When you press the water lever on the dispenser do you hear a noise? Kind of a humming noise. Well, that is your water valve, so if you hear it then it is probably working.

Ice maker & water dispenser won't work

I recently found out that the water supply lines are coiled up inside behind the frige on the refrigerator side moving the unit will cause those coiled up lines to shift to the freezer side of the unit, causing a freeze up,take the cardboard lower back off and move those lines further away from the freezer side of the unit, as one of those coiled up lines are to chill the water for the dispenser and the other is supply for the icemaker, this should fix your problem, becareful not to move them too far away from the freezer side as they are meant to chill the water for the dispenser

Water dispencer not working

check inside the bottom of the refrigerator for water, the water line goes thru the back of the refrigerator and it may have cracked and leaking inside instead of going to the dispenser.
if not then water is most likely frozen in the line going thru the back of the refrigerator. look behind the pans in the refrigerator and there should be a coil of clear plastic water line, this is the reservoir that chills the water for the dispenser. sometimes it will freeze up if the refrigerator is very cold.
