HP Pavilion DV4000 laptop screen only showing as 4:3 aspect ratio

Hello,

I am a technician working on an HP Pavilion DV4000. The problem I have is that the picture is only filling up the top left portion of the screen, (as if it were stuck in some kind of 4:3 aspect ratio as opposed to it's native 16:9 widescreen mode). Even upon boot and in the BIOS. (similar to the way a desktop monitor would have to be adjusted via the buttons on the front of it. I've tried changing any and all settings I could find for video/screen adjustment within Windows XP Home. No luck... Can someon please help me!? Thank you VERY much in advance.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have tried everything in the control panel. Including properties for the graphics controller. As I said befor. It is also like this while in BIOS. I'm positive that I have the correct driver because I got it directly from the HP support page.

Correct. No effect on the display. However, I have not tried the, "safe mode", method. I will try it, and going to Windows update. Thank you! Lets just hope it works...

Have you changed the resolution?
Go to control panel, display, settings, and make sure the resolution is set to more. Click on the advanced button and choose the tab for graphics or the graphics controller, choose properties, and adjust the screen area.
Please also consult this link recommended setting for HP notebooks. (click here)
If that doesn't do it, is there a possibility that the wrong driver has been installed. You can check the original product specs at hp.

When you decrease the resolution does it have no effect on the display? What you're describing is a symptom of the resolution set higher than supported by the monitor... but you already know that.
Try visiting windows update, run a custom scan and see if they offer any hardware updates for the graphics...
Possibly you could boot into safe mode, uninstall the graphics drivers and revert to default vga drivers, then boot normal and reinstall the drivers.
But I haven't seen this problem before...
    Best of luck...

You might take a look at this MS article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307960
It could lead you to a solution for that error....

The problem is due to the GMCH chipset which is used as the vedio controller. I am regretfully say that you have nothing to do unless you are a laptop technician. Nothing is to change yourself inside the system. The chip is fitted on the motherboard itself. It needs special kind of tools such as SMD Rework Station and experience to replace or repair the chip. The service charges varies according to location, service shops and persons. Contact a technician nearby you. Make a reply for this.

download from hp this driver to your my_documents folder and install the software for the driver... then restart your computer

does this work... solution

or goto start > control panel > system > device manager show up

look at your audio device in the list... does it have a yellow explaination point.. no driver installe

a red mark mean on the audio device means that the sound chip is bad... and you need to ship the board to a repair shop ... or rma the laptop for repair if still under warranty

also go under the bios to be sure the sound is turned on .. there sometimes is an option to turn off the sound functionality

Dv4000 hp pavilion dark screen

Have you replace the lcd inverter? if it works on external monitor, given the screen is new, then it leaves the inverter. Usually in the case of dark screen, it should be the first thing to check/replace.
