I would suggest either contacting your manufacture for a diagnostic disk. It is possible the ports are failing. If all tests do come back ok and detects no problems with the ports, I would then recommend uninstalling any programs that would use the ports for example KVM switch software. If that does not work (and again the diag came back ok) I would reinstall your windows.

Could a driver problem cause a mp3 player not to be read by your laptop?

Yes, the drivers have to be installed in order for the computer to identify any device attached to it.
If your laptop is a windows machine you can check whether drivers are installed by entering device managerand checking whether there are any items under the "other devices" drop down. The exclamation mark on that tab indicates that the drivers are not installed.
If your mp3 is attached to the computer and not listed there it will be in need of the appropriate drivers

First you need to get either DVD or USB working. The DVD can be easily replaced by a surplus part, from broken laptops. The USB ports, if not working, need to be electronically checked by a technician. Then, find a working DVD to reinstall a suitable OS. You can also generate a bootable USB drive (even flash type) from, for example, Windos 7 or 8. All you need is the original ISO file and a tool to generate the bootable drive (e.g. "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool"). Good luck!

My usb ports on my laptop only recognizes my phone and mp3 player and not my external hdd, it tells me to format the plug and play external hdd. It does not do this in all my usb ports though

Maybe the external hard drive is to large to be recognized by your computer. Some computers won't recognize real large external drives.

Another problem could be that your external hard drive does not support Windows 7.

I didn't find a port in ma laptop in which i can plug n play b'coz it didn't plug in into usb ports

Hi there,
These are the minimum system requirements of the flash drive you bought.
• Computer with a USB port • Latest version of Windows XP, Windows Vista® , Windows 7 • Mac® OS X 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 • Minimum free disk space: 600MB recommended
Any way back to the question, there is a protective plastic clip for the gold contacts have you tried removing it before using, it might be the reason you cant stick it to any USB port. Any way don't lost the cap so it can lessen dirt on the gold contacts.

Hopefully this information helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi , I have recently removed the windows vista and installed the Windows 7 Os in my Sony Vaio laptop. But now the laptop can not read the memory stick of my camera. could you please...

Hello. Most probably you need the driver for your card reader. If you give me the model number of your computer I can point you to the download link. Or also you can try fetching the driver from windows update within Windows 7.

Laptop will not read some USB Memory Sticks

Is it the older one that doesnt read the thumb drives? If so I actually had the same issue with my laptop and the fix was really easy. First do you have more than 1 usb port on the laptop or multiple usb ports? Have you verified that its all the usb ports on the computer or just one in particular? I found that a build up of dust can immensely affect the way a usb port will work with certain devices. Make sure you dont need to do a quick cleaning. If all is clean then it may be neccesary to go to the website support of each thumbdrive and get drivers for them. It should tell you exactly how to load the drivers to the usb thumb drives.

Sigma card reader/writer doesn't recognize my new SD card

Hello,

What I suspect here is that, the USB port that you are using is a USB 1.0 port, which has a lower voltage not enough to power on your Storage drive.

In this case, there are two things you can do,

1. Change the USB port you are using for the storage drive to a USB 2.0 one (Just keep Checking all the ports one by one in case you dont know which one it is).

2. If your Storage drive has external power facility, just plug it in an external power first, before connecting it to the system.

If there are no USB 2.0 Ports on your system at all,

then just go to any electronic store and tell them you want to buy a USB 2.0 Expansion card.

and if it is a laptop, A USB 2.0 PCMCIA card.

Install it on your system, and connect your external drive through it.

Hope this helps you out.

Goodluck
