While DVI and HDMI offer compatible video lines, the DVI connection offers support for two analog audio channels only and cannot transport data packets required for digital audio. You will not get anything beyond 2.1 audio across the dongle.
If you have a HDMI connector on your graphics board and your external hardware, try to use a proper HDMI cable.
