Question about Carrier 38CKC060 Air Conditioner

Cost to replace carrier 38ckc060

We just had our spring A/C check-up and I've been told that the readings on my compressor are lighting up as 'bad' . They recommend that I replace the whole unit. It is about 10 years old and the guy could not give me a ball park price to do the job - he has to send round his crack team of specialist salesmen to discuss it with me. I am a bit wary about this as the last time this happened I was quoted $2500 for a job which I got someone else to do for $1000 (replacing a coil).
2 questions - Are these annual contracts where you pay a monthly fee for 2 free checks a year a good idea - it seems that they always find something wrong that costs a fortune to fix. 2nd - if I have to replace this unit how much should it cost approximately?
I'd be grateful for your input.

Did your unit work last summer? 10 Years old is very soon unless it is a cheap unit like janitrol or goodman. Most units last min. 15 years and 20 most of the time. Generally speaking any ways. To replace compressor cost maybe 750.00 to 1,000.00 you have a big house looks like. 5 Ton unit. The whole system could be 6000.00 to 8000.00 depending on grade of unit. I would get a second opinion though cause I am wondering if they are just padding their pocket.

I have a Carrier AC model 38TKB030300 and I want to confirm the correct capacitor so I can replace it. Can you help? My central home unit shut off and the repairman said it was the capacitor that was...

Look at the old capacitor. The mircofarad rating should be printed on the side. If you can't read it then take the capacitor or the model # with you to a heating and air dealer the sells Carrier products. The repairman should have put one it for you.

38CKC060 Carrier. Outdoor unit-fan does not spin, noise and very hot inside the cage!

It sounds like your fan motor is burnt up. If the noise you are hearing is coming from the motor itself, then it's going to have to be replaced. One way to check this also is to turn the unit off and try to turn the fan blades by hand, if you cant get to it, then use something skinny and long enough to drop through the opening on top. If there is any resistance, than its difinitly a bad motor. If the noise you are hearing is coming from the compressor, then your fan motor still might have a chance and only needs a capacitor which is a round or oval part inside the units electrical compartment. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, it is possible to fix these yourself. Just a warning though, if your fan hasn't been running and the compressor has, it can or could burn up the compressor also. This is another reason why it can be hot inside the cage. Your compressor will go into internal lockout if it gets to hot and will not come back on until it cools, but it can only handle so much. Hope this points you in the right direction and good luck!

Compressor activates breaker as soon as it comes on what is the problem

you have a short to ground could be the compressor shorting to ground you turn the power off and unplug the compressor terminals but flage how they came off, You can ohm from one post to the other and you should have a reading not infinity. If it not that check for loose wires or a bad capacitor.

Condenser Fan and Compressor not turning on.

Are you sure you have high voltage going to the unit? One wire from fan lands on top left of contactor, the other two go to C and Fan on capacitor. Manually push in contactor, if no fan than no high voltage.

System not cooling properly. Two speed compressor

According to the reading sound like compressor is working fine .There are other issue that contribute to no cooling and the main one is dirty filters so check your filter to see if it's dirty and clean or replaced it .
If filter is fine then you might have dirty evaporator or condenser coil so clean those out too .
Does this unit have 2 compressor and if it does is the 2 compressor running

Condencing fan is not spinning and very hot to the touch, the compressor is making a buzzing noise.

Check the capacitor. You can use a multimeter to do that. Also if it looks swollen then it probably needs to be replaced. Some units have just 1 that controls the fan and compressor and just 1 side can go bad.
