This should be plug-n-play. Have you tried restarting the computer with the hard drive plugged in? If that doesn't work, I would return it.

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine.
try it in different usb ports.
Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers.
then check.
Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check.
Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer too then your harddrive has internal issue.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

I have 1TB simpletech drive. was working fine ecxept today. the msg is that this drive is not formated and needs to be. How can I recover my files?

Hello

My apologies if this message finds you long after posting this problem , but I am currently working through a backlog of problems that never got answered and hopefully this info can still be of use if not now possibly in future.

Please download Disc Digger HERE. This is a free tool you can use that works very well and there is no installation required, just run the program once you downloaded it.

Once you have connected the memory disk / hdd to the computer , run the program.

On the program , select the dig deep option for accidentally deleted files or dig deeper for a formatted drive. Then select the disk you want to do the recovery on and run the program.

The data will be displayed and you can recover it from there. This will only work if the card has not been used since the data was lost. Save the files to a location on the computer hard drive and not back to the disk it is recovering from as this will overwrite the other pictures that still needs to be recovered.

Some of the properties of the files may become lost in the recovery but the pictures should be fine.

You will also only be able to recover certain file types using this method.

Feel free to ask if you need more assistance.

Kind Regards
Andrea

Hi there,

You need to install the hard drive driver for the PC to recognize it. If you don't have one, just look in the internet for a free driver.

Computer wont recognize external drive

The simpletech 1tb drive's case has issues. I had the same problem. It actually quit while I was running a video off the drive. I replaced the case by removing the harddrive from the one it came in and installing it in another case and now it works again.

The first thing I would try is installing the drivers it came with, but failing that you will need to replace it's case.

It has 4 screws to remove, 2 under the silver warranty voiding tape and 2 visable on the bottom side. Remove them, then use a flat screwdrive to pop the case open (gently). Then remove the harddrive.

You will need a case with SATA data AND power cables for this to work.
