Generic problem for all Home Theater Systems

It says Protect and powers off, will not play cds, dvds, or even power on. What is the problem and what can I do? Please let me know. Thank you. I have done nothing yet but check the outlets and plugs.

the dvd player reads protect and powers off and I don't know why?
