Question about Compaq Armada E500 Notebook

1 Answer

External/Internal Hard Drive

I have an old Compaq Armada E500. I purchase an EIDE internal hard drive. I purchase a USB to IDE/SATA converter so I can use the hard drive as an external. Now the device shows up in Device Manager but it does not show the volume nor does it show up in My Computer as a disk drive? Do I have to do some special formatting or is it just not compatible? HELP!

Had to replace my hard drive. Now I need to retrive the information from my external hard drive to my internal drive so all my settings and files show up. Any suggestions?

What kind of drive is the external drive? usb, plug it in to an available usb port. If the drive is some other format like IDE or SATA, then you will need a USB adapter to plug the drive into to easily connect the drive to your computer.

External HD device driver for Compaq Armada E500

First, try the external drive in some other "recent" computer.
Use the other computer to "format" the disk-space,
and thus make an "empty" partition. Then, reconnect it to your computer, and see if the total capacity of the drive has been detected.

According to the manufacturer's web-site:

this computer dates from 2001/2002. So, the claim of a maximum of 32GB probably is correct -- drives larger than 32GB were either not-available, or were prohibitively-expense, nearly 10 years ago.

Download the latest BIOS-update from the above web-site, and CAREFULLY follow the instructions to update the BIOS.

However, you have not said what happens when you connect the external disk-drive, as a USB device. It *MIGHT* work "as is", i.e., without trying to update the BIOS.

The hard drive is full what can i do? I have a compaq E500 note book can the hard drive be upgraded?

If you have a DVD writer in the laptop use that to back up your data and clear the built up data on it, or purchase an external hard drive so you can back up and save any data to that.
In answer to your question about upgrading the existing hard drive then yes you can do that but it would mean reinstalling the operating system either by recovery disks or a Windows install CD/DVD.

Hard Drive requires lots of power to load. If you have purchased only the IDE cable to connect it to USB port, USB port will be unable to initialize the Hard Drive.
To make it work, you require an external casing for IDE Hard Drives with external power support. Like this one --

If you already have this casing with external power support, please let me know.

Controller Driver Issue on Armada M700

I am running a Armada M700 with a Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00 60GB Hard Drive - Ultra ATA-100, 5400 RPM, 8MB. The driver that is loaded in mine is on both primary and secondary is atapi.sys. This driver is also installed on the Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller, along with intelide.sys. The main difference is I am running Window XP Pro SP2. But I believe that they should use the same driver.
Hope this helps.

Compaq e500 boot up problem

If it were my laptop here is what I would do: 1. Install a new hard drive. 2. Install the operating system. 3. After an anti-virus program was installed and updated, I would connect the old hard drive to the laptop using one of those external USB hard drive adapter cables. 4. If the old drive proves to be readable, copy documents/photos/bookmarks to the new hard drive. Hope this helps.
