Question about Sony KP-53HS30 53" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Distorted picture i have a sony kp-53hs30 TV that I bought 5 years ago. all of a sudden, from yesterday we had problems with the picture. it is distorted and streched out. I see thick red or green color lines and the letters look like ghost picture or 3d view. Anyone knows how to fixt it? i opened the back panel and found 3 projector lenses. Not sure whether fixing them in a specific angle would fix this issue. Does anyone know how and at what angle to fix those lenses. If not what could be the problem that would cause the ghose picture. How much it would cost if I call a tech to fix this issue. any help is appreciated. thanks mp

Sony tv picture is distorted

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

I recently bought a Sony KP-53HS30 rear video TV

Hello Sarah!
There is no bulb to replace in your TV. Image is created by three CRT's and you don't want to replace them, just trust me on that one. It could cost you up to $1800 to do that.
All you can do is to clean lenses of those CRT's. You have to disconnect TV from the power outlet and remove rear cover. Using very soft brush and vacuum cleaner remove dust from Red, Green and Blue CRT lenses. Do not use solutions unless you got something special for optics. Solutions will leave film on the surfaces. That would improve brightness and contrast of image.
To adjust focus front grille have to be removed. Than central piece cover held by 5 screws. Behind it you can locate black plastic "box" size little smaller than cigarette pack. there are 6 adjustment "screws". Three of them are "screen". You don't touch those. Another three "focus" there is one for each color. Turn TV on. Hit "menu" button. And adjust focus for each color separately. If menu goes away hit it again.
This is the only improvements you can do.
Everything else will involve humongous amounts of cash.
Good luck!
Russ.

My Sony KP-53HS30 rear projection tv looks like a 3d movie without the glasses. It comes and goes and sometimes will have red, green, blue squigley lines all over the picture

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

Grey Screen with 480p signals (or higher)

I've had a KP 53HS10 for close to 8 years I think. 4 years ago the picture started blinking after long use, then more and more often. I had a repairman come and replace the tuner card (that's all I know about what he did). Now that I finally have HD from cable, I've found that 720 doesn't work and 1080i works, but the picture blinks on and off apparently struggling with some inner problems. Everything looks great, for a second and then it blinks. The red light blinks 5 times repeatedly while this is going on. I called SONY 5 times means get a repair man. I searching forms like this for help as well.
