Replacing hose.

Head came off grohe sink sprayer. Threaded hard rod nearly inaccessable. To install new hose, do I remove threaded rod, then replace flexible hose and the replace threaded hard rod with hose attached, or must I separate the two and leave threaded rod in place? Thanks
