Your HDD may be bad. I have had a number of HDD that appear fine in the BIOS but won't format either via the install disk or separately via a Linux boot disc.(You can somtimes hear them clicking on and off [seeking])

If you are mad keen on the drive, then D/L 'Hirens Boot Disc' and boot into the DOS mode (it also has a Mini XP mode).and use the HDD format utlity 'killdisk'. This will remove anything on the drive, format it and set it up ready for a fresh install.

If Hirens Boot Disk can't see the SATA drive then its stuffed.. for sure..

yep agreed its probably the hard drive. If its clicking or constantly seeking its stuffed.

However, you may have a conflict. Check that the hard drive is set to 'master' not 'slave'. Sometimes they do not default properly and they get 'confused' and play up. Setting to 'cable select' doesn't always work.

If you download Hirnes Boot disk it comes with a program called Hard Disk Regenerator.. run this utility for a day or so and it will fix the disk if it is not a hardware problem. It fixes disk surface problem which cause read and write failures. It may be able to recover your disk for you. I have tried this on numerous HDD and saved many that way.
Note: I've had numerous Seagate's fail on me in the last few years and won't buy them any more.

I bought a used ibm r40, changed the hard dsrive and tryed to load xp pro. after loading the system files the computer wants to reboot to finalise. After this it goes right back to fresh install start.

When you say you tried to load XP Pro, did the hard drive already have XP installed or are you installing it fresh from a CD? If you are installing it fresh from the CD and it is asking you to reboot, it seems as if you are letting it try to boot again from the CD. When it reboots and says "Press any key to boot from CD..." don't press anything, just let it boot. It should finalize the installation there!

Hope that helps!

Laptop powers on, but windows doesnt load

Boot PC from Windows XP installation CD you will be ask to instal fresh copy or repair existing installation - go for "fresh copy" software will analyze you PC and try to find your previous copy of Win XP you will be ask again to repair copy of your existing Windows Xp now go for "Repair" option so installation software restore all Windows files and will keep all your settings*.
This solution is only temporary because IE 7 and 8 will no longer work after restoring - backup all your data and instal fresh copy of Win XP after all and always keep Your Backup up to date!!

My computer will not boot up.

First, if there is no password set you may be able to simply press enter leaving it blank and continue with the repair.
Alternatively, you can reinstall WIN XP over your existing installation which will replace your windows files with fresh copies from the CD.
