If there is absolutely nothing on the screen then it is likely faulty and just a new LCD is required. If however it is lit but full of black squares then either the main logic board has had it or the power supply is faulty.
You may need to download canon's navigator program to retrieve the scan. The printer driver will not do that. Just google "canon navigator (plus your printer model) and the program should come up.
