Clothes dryer dryer will hum drum will not turn

My drum will sometimes stop turning in the middle of a cycle, and the motor just hums. I pause the dryer, open the door, rotate the drum, unplug and plug the electrical, and then it will usually complete the cycle. Does that mean the belt is "occasionally" slipping? How do I check this?

When I try and start my ge dbb3300eaoww dryer it buzzes as if it wants to start if I spin it with my hand it will work. I put a new belt on it and it does the same thing.

dryer won't run, but hot air blow and humming when turned on

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2009

Kenmore dryer will emit a very low hum, drum will not turn nor does the blower come on. Just moved dryer to outbuilding very carefully with no excess bumping around or jostling of any kind. Electrical connections are brand new.

Belt is off, idler is off or broken. Replace the belt and idler. Make sure it is installed correctly with tension on the belt. It will take care of your problem

Motor start switch is bad. This is typically replaceable with out replacing the motor.
Will take care of the problem.

Replace the belt. It has stretched to the point it no longer can carry the load. Should consider replacing the idler at the same time. This will take care of the problem.

Either the belt around the drum and motor has broken or is sliping, OR the motor is in a bind. Defeat the door switch and try to turn the drum by hand while trying to start it. If it turns freely with little or no resistance the belt is broken or slipping. If it is hard to turn or it tries to turn some then stops the motor is defective or the belt is slipping.

Also there is a tensioner arm assy in most dryers that will pop off at times all you have to do is rethread the belt around that arm and drum along with the motor.

Its kind of like a tensioner pully on a belt system on your car.

change the drive belt. evidently the belt has stretched to the point the belt tensioning device can no longer do its job. when you change the belt make a diagram of which way the belt is reaved through the tensioning device. if you don't you'll be back here asking how to arrange the belt.

SOURCE: press the start button on dryer, it hums but wont

Sounds like a weak motor. You'll have to get a new motor installed. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to install yourself on that type of machine if you are handy. Motor is located in the bottom right of the machine, attached to the drum belt through a small pulley underneath the drum next to the motor.

Dryer Repair - The Dryer is not Turning

If your clothes dryer is not turning the drum, then you have a big problem. If the clothes are not being tossed around so that the warm air can flow through them the drying just is not happening. There a re a couple of common problems that will cause the dryer drum not to turn.

If you are getting the hum from the motor but no action then you need to determine if the motor is running or if the motor is not running but trying too. To my ears I can tell the difference right away. The trying to turn hum is a much lower hum and not the whining hum of the motor spinning freely with no load on it. The best thing to do is to check the belt and see if the belt is around the motor pulley. If the belt is still on the pulley then the motor is not turning. Check the drum to see if you can turn it by hand. If it is stuck then figure out what is holding it from turning. If it spins then the motor is bad, replace the motor.

When checking the belt, if you find that it is not on the motor pulley, then you will need a new belt. When you get the new belt, check out the belt routing diagrams in my tips section for the diagram that fits your dryer.

If the drum will not turn, you probably will want to get a new belt and new guide wheels, rollers, slides, glides or whatever supports the drum. Check out my tip on dryer noise, for more information about that.

Main thing is to not assume that the motor hum is a bad motor. As you can see there are other possible causes for problems that can show the same symptoms.

I have DBSR4EB3WW model number. Last night I was drying clothes, tryed to turn dryer back on , turned the button to right to start clothes and all it would do is make a humming noise. ...

Hello Deborah, it could be a number of things, First the belt, usually if you hear a humming and the drum isn't turning, Its a broken or slipped belt, the hum you hear is the motor turning, But with no belt the drum can't turn other things that can go wrong and cause this are the safety switch located by the dryer door has failed, or a thermostat located in the rear of the machine is bad or stuck if you feel you can check these things , thats cool, just let me know you want to give it a try ,

The dyrer will not turn on. The dryer makes a humming noise but will not turn on.

Open the dryer door and slowly rotate the dryer drum in a counterclockwise (CCW) direction. Rotate the drum 2-3 revolutions and then shut the door and see if it will start. If it continues to just hum and not start could indicate a voltage issue, motor issue or a friction issue. Open the door again and locate the door switch plunger in the upper or lower corner on the hinge side of the drum opening. Hold the plunger in while someone begins rotating the drum counterclockwise. While turning the drum counter clockwise and holding the door switch plunger inwards press the start button. If it starts, there is likely a friction problem or motor problem. Also, check the blower on the dryer to see if a article of clothing may have gotten stuck there and preventing the motor from running.

Affinity dryer less than 2 yrs. old will not turn. It hums, but the drum will not turn.

Please check if there's something stuck outside the rotating drum. Sometimes small cloth escapes out of the drum during drying and gets stuck in the rotating shaft. Just try to reach the back side fo the rotating drum inside and make sure that there's no cloth that's stucked inside. Please make sure that you unplug the cord first.
If in case that you did not find anything, you may have a busted capacitor or worse, the motor is defective. It could be that the motor windings are shorted or a bad bushing.
Hope this helps.

When you turn on the dryer you can hear the motor hum but the drum wont turn ...i checked the belt and it is not broken

When you checked the belt, did you check to see if the motor would turn by hand, if not the motor is locked down and that's why you hear the hum noise, it still has power and still trying to rotate, but from being locked down it has no option but to strain and hum. If that's not it, check around the drum for a sock or small piece of clothing, it can wedge between drum and dryer frame and cause the tub not to rotate just like if the motor were locked down.

ELECTRIC DRYER WON'T TUMBLE

Possibly the belt assembly. if you open the door and try to turn the drum does it turn with a little resistance, noises? this model has rollers, pulley, and a four groove belt 92 1/4" , sometimes the pulley sticks after yrs of use, belts wear, drum misaligns. the humming should be the motor trying to work.
