Question about Toshiba 36A60 36" TV

Black box in middle of screen

The TV worked fine until one day when I turned it on there was a black box in the middle of the screen. The picture behind it was fine and the only way the view the picture was to use the PIP button, but with that I have the PIP screens scrolling across the bottom of the screen whick blocks out 2" of picture. This black box does not appear on all channels, just the local and most cable channels. Any suggestions?

Re: Black box in middle of screen

You have CC (closed captioning) turned on and it is set to text mode.....Go to the menu on the remote use the right arrow and hilight "C.CAPT",use the down arrow to highlight "C.CAPT",use the right arrow and highlight "off" then exit button on remote.

Zenith TV has a big black box in the middle of the screen.

After reading other postings, we figured out that it was the caption box, went to menu and turned it off.
Thanks for the great site, we wouldn't have figured it out without it !

Big black box in the middle of the screen

The black box is there because your closed captioning is on and set to text mode. Some channels send the signal even when there is no actual text to display. You can get rid of it by either turning off closed captioning or changing it to CC1 or CC2 mode instead of text. If you can't find those settings, then restore factory settings as directed in your user manual.

civilman, the first set has either no high voltage or is collapsed vertically, until someone checks for high voltage there is no concrete answer, the AV27730 is vertical collapse from your description, either the voltage to the vertical IC is missing or the vertical IC has failed, not a big deal cost-wise, hope this answers your questions, if not e-mail me back, good luck, BMW Rider

Our TV reset itsself to sales pitch

1) Demo mode clears by holding vol up & chan up at the same time at the set front buttons. Or try menu & power.......

2) Black box is called a text box = part of closed-caption option.
Select CC to turn text box off.........

Note:Always provide Model # , Chassis # and age......
serial # not needed / helpful..........T.
