I M WORRIED ABOUT VIRUS. WHAT CAN I DO NOW?

If you are worried about viruses affecting your computer, I suggest you install an anti-virus program on your computer. There are commercial anti-virus programs such as Nortons and McAfee.
There are also freeware anti-virus programs on the Internet, AVG is a good program. Generally commercial programs offer better protection.
AVG also offers a commercial version of their freeware anti-virus program.
Please click on this link to download freeware AVG should you wish to use this program :-

Deleted AVG, cannot connect to router wirelessly or wired, wired and two other computers work fine, my laptop will not receive a DHCP address from the router...why can I not connect to the router and do I...

The fact is, that if you do not have anti-virus on a M$ machine you will quickly get a Microsoft virus which before it does anything else will bar access to any website which offers anti-virus.
There are 2 solutions. The first is to download the full AVG free version together with all the updates, using another computer. Using the seed file is no good in many cases. So get this file, currently 89.1 MB from:- http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus And get the updates from:- http://free.avg.com/gb-en/download-update Now put these files on a USB stick and plug this into your M$ machine which is already disconnected from the internet and install the AVG from the USB stick. Next do the updates to AVG also from this USB stick Now scan the computer fully BEFORE you again attempt to connect to the internet.
The second solution is to stop using M$ and to install Linux, it is totally free and does not have viruses, in more than 40 years (windows has been around since 1992 only) there has never been a computer virus, ever. You can download the system for free. Just put 'linux' in google and you will find lots. Go on, you know this makes sense and, by the way the Linux system does do everything you are ever likely to need. And then it is so much faster, approximately 1 minute or less to boot and similar to shut down. My preferred flavour is Mandriva (http://www.mandriva.com) but all the versions are good. I have been a Linux user since about 1997 and so I have not suffered any problems, but I do continue to help others who are not so fortunate and where I can I do set up a dual boot system for them.
AVG are doing an absolutely brilliant job, so home users on a budget should not even think about paid for versions.

SPEAKING WITH MY EXPERIENCE UNISTALL IT. TRY SOMETHING ELSE.

FREE SPYWARE
Download Spybot Search & Destroy. Restart computer, then run Spybot to see what spyware comes up, AND DELET IT.

FYI---Virus Protection-- 2 programs of virus protection will conflict with each other and will actually cancel out the protection. SO just download one.

Running Spybot Search & Destroy with EITHER Avast or Avg (great Free virus protection programs ) will keep a computer in good working condition. FREE

I need a good internet security program that ISN'T Norton

Wow, this is a big answer. There are many free virus protection programs but I've compiled a list of free, great quality, and awesome protection anti-virus programs for your solution.

Free Anti-Virus:
  • Windows Defender
  • Ad-Aware
  • PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition
  • AVG Anti-Virus Free
  • Avira AntiVir Personal - Free AntiVirus

In addition to the collection of anti-virus programs I would recommend some cleaning and analyst programs to speed up your computer.

Cleaning & Analyst Utilities:
  • CCleaner
  • Defraggler
  • Recuva
  • Speccy
I'm sure you'll be happy with these programs. Have fun and always use protection!

Thanks,

How do I isolate a computer from the internet when it is part of a network that does access it?

your pc should still be able to run a anti virus programme, as i assume it's atleast windows 98se, so you can install a free excellent anti virus programme called AVG free, with free updates, see link below:- http://www.download.com/3000-2239_4-10746390.html Your router will have wep WPA-PSK security and a built in firewall also, so it should be safe especially if it is win98se as this version is not a suseptable to viruses and trojans unlike XP. You can assign mac addresses in your router, this will only allow any inputed pc's mac addresses to access the router, you will need to input each individual pc's mac address into the router settings.
