Question about Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera

1 Answer

Auto focus does not appear to be working

Not sure what is going on.  I just got this camera from a friend. The auto-focus switch on the lens is in the on position but the lens will not change focus.
Thanks for your help.

The model is Canon Eos D40.

  • joshea Apr 16, 2009

The switch is ON on both the camera and the lens.  Unfortunately, I do not have another AF lens to try.

  • joshea Apr 16, 2009

Great idea!  Thanks I'll try that.

Make sure AF switch is "ON" on the camera.
Still doesn't work?
Also, try another AF lens.

You can go to any Wolf /Ritz camera or any other camera shop and ask them to test your camera with their AF lens, they should do it for free.

My NikonD3100 is no longer focusing, my battery is charged and I am at a loss

Make sure you're using a lens that worked before on this camera.. many consumer bodies lack the built in focus motor, so you must purchase lenses that have the motor built into the lens. If it lacks a motor - no auto focus will be possible.

Remove and re-seat the lens.

Make sure that any Aperture ring on the lens barrel is set to the smallest (largest number f22) possible.

Make sure any and all Auto / Manual Focus switches are set to A or Auto.

Try taking a picture in broad daylight - or other well lit area - if the subject is very dark, the auto focus will struggle or "hunt".

Let me know if these suggestions solve your problem - good luck!

Blurry pictures

You did not say which lens or lenses you are using, but most auto-focus lenses have a switch for selecting manual or auto-focus. First, check your camera's menu settings to make sure auto-focus is enabled and then your lens to make sure you did not accidently leave it in the manual focus position? If it is in the auto-focus position and still not taking sharp pictures, switch it to manual and see if you can get it to focus correctly. It is also possible that your auto-focus alignment is out because your camera was bumped, jolted or dropped. If realignment is necessary, you can send the camera and lens to Nikon for repair or find a knowledgeable camera repairman.

Won't auto focus

Make sure the auto-manual focus switch on your camera is set to auto (A) and also make sure the auto manual focus selector on the lens is in auto (A) as well. If your lens contacts are dirty then this will affect the function of the lens as well. Clean those with either a lint free type cloth and alcohol or methylated spirits.

After taken photos the image out of focus

On the front of the camera body, below the lens release button you should find a two position switch labeled "AF" & "M" This is the "Auto Focus - Manual" selector switch. Make sure the selector is set to "AF" for auto focusing.

Your lens may have a similar focus selector switch on its barrel. There are two types of switches used - depending on the lens. The first is labeled "M/A" and "M" The "M/A" position indicates it is in "Auto Focus" mode with a "Manual" focus over ride capability. You can simply twist the focus ring to change the focus to a point other than that chosen by the camera's auto focus system. The "M" position is Manual Focus mode. No focusing operations will be performed by the D80 auto focus system - focusing must be done by the photographer.

The second type has "A" & "M" positions. These represent Auto and Manual focus. The difference between this type switch and the "A/M & "M" switch is that when in "A", the camera will no allow the focus to be changed manually. There will be opposition to twisting the focus ring in the position. Forcing it will likely result in damage. The selector switch must be changed to "M" to change the focus.

If either switch is set to manual, the auto focus system will be disabled, so it is very important to have them both set to "A" or "A/M".

I hope this helps. Please rate my reply - thanks!

My canon 20D autofocus doesn't work... can you tell me haw to do?? thanks..

Make sure your camera is set to Auto mode (top left knob). Check your lens and make sure it is switched to "auto" and not "manual"(sliding switch near base of lens). Make sure your lens can rotate and move without being obstructed. Clean the lens contact by removing the lens and use 99% alcohol or lens cleaner sparingly to clean off the metal contacts.
You can also check your viewfinder focus, it has a small dial upper right, that you can fine tune to focus to your own eyesight. If it is way off, your view will always appear to be out of focus.
Hope that helps.

I have never been able to auto focus with my Nikon DX 18-70mm

Sure there's a cure! Auto focus on the 18-70 and a D70 has a few switches and menu settings that help to set it up. The switches are on the lens (I'm going to guess this is the one you're missing) and the side of the camera body. If you only have problems with this lens and other lenses auto focus fine, this is really the only thing that could make it not focus. The switch has two settings, M/A and M. It must be in M/A in order to auto focus. Older auto focus lenses don't have this switch.

The other switches and settings would result in auto focus not working with any lens you put on.

If you have problems with other lenses, or if the 18-70 is your only lens, drop a note here and I'll go into more detail on the other settings.

Will not auto focus with a smaller lens.

I had the same issue with my Nikon d60...my 18-55mm did auto focus but my 55-200mm only manual focused, i thought it might have been my camera as i heard that not all lenses are compatible with my d60 but it turned out to be the focussing motor or something that was damaged, it was making a very funny noise when it tried to auto focus with it,like a screeching sound..if this is the case you should get it repaired and looked at, also check on the lens if it says it is a AF lens,if so make sure th switch on the side of the lens is switched on AF not MF. hope it helps

cheers
