Cannot play need an compatible dvd decoder

Hi, I think I can Help you today with this.

Most dvd players require decoder software in order for them to work but fortunately, there are several free programs out there that will work for you in this matter.

I recommend VLC, as it is a free program that not only will allow you to play the dvd, but has features for video, audio and sync control as well.

If you don't like that program, you can also try Real Player, Or Divx plus.

Both of these programs are free, and they have the proper dvd decoder software in them as well.

Also, if you can download a program called k-lie codec pack, it may very well fix your problem, without havung to get any of the other software, and you can then play your dvd's using Windows Media Player

I hope this helps you out.

Where can i get a free dvd downloadable decoder?

VLC will play dvds and dvd vob files ;)

I've used "free" decoders in the past but they're usually spyware ridden and full of junk.

Use VLC, trust me.

Here's a link to the site.

I have purchased an external dvd writer for my netbook but unfortuntely when i try and play dvds the message- unable to play as no decoder installed appears on the screen. Which decoder would you...

Try this link to install K-lite codec pack:
It also inclides Media Player Classic.
To play DVD open the program, drag the folder VIDEO_TS from your DVD disk and drop it in the program's window. Double click on the picture to toggle full screen and window modes.

Cannot play dvds. says my Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

Chances are you need the proper codec to run the DVD. Software companies often write their own 'interpreter' software to read the format they use to encode videos/music files.

Trying doing a search on the internet for the type of file format Windows Media Player is trying to run, then look for the codec for that format. Unless the format is copyright protected, Microsoft should have the codec available on their website.
