Are you still running W98? It's possible it needs to be refigured via the jumpers in the back, next to the power connector. I'd suggest googling the drive, find out how to configure it for your new machine.
Are you booting to the new machines existing HD (5 Gb)? If so make sure your boot order is 5 Gb, then #2 the new drive. You don't really have to even put the new drive in the boot order. You will need to set the jumpers however. Probably not SATA. If one is IDE and the other SATA can't use them on the same motherboard.

Good luck

You cannot just throw a hard drive from one computer into another there are specific programs that perform specific jobs for individual components that are different in all computers.

SOURCE: SEAGATE HARD DISK DRIVE PROBLEM...

Hi,

I am venturing a guess, but it could possibly be your memory and not your hard drive.

Additionally, you can partition and format the 40Gb HD in a second PC using a third party utility such as Partition Magic which would also allow you to verify the integrity of the hard drive

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: how to install a new seagate hard drive?

I have one thats ide ultra, & my computers see it as a disc drive, like a cd drive when i put it in an external seagate case. but when i put it in as an internal it shows up in cmos w/ 320 g space, & no matter which pin config i use it doesnt show when the os is booted. I enabled LBA like it says on the drive, & tried all the other options in CMOS & havent got it to go yet, but it sounds like its running perfectly when it powers up. it'll go, but its actin crazy. ill post it when i get that bastard.

SOURCE: Seagate ST3500630AS SATA 500 GB hard Drive

You will have to send it to a data recovery company in order to retrive the data sounds like the circuit board failed therefore the drive is not receiving power.Usually if this board is good you would hear the drive spin up.
Good luck

Seagate 9SF2A4-500 external hard drive on Windows 98

Windows 98 will not run a drive that large, so that is your problem. You will need to connect it to a newer system, and break it down into small drives by setting up different partitions. Perhaps it will see it then. Also, most manufacturers are no longer supporting Windows 98. You really need to just upgrade your system to a newer OS.

Seagate external harddrive with windows 98 OS

Remove (or take to your local computer shop) the Win 98 hard drive from the computer.
Put this drive in an external USB drive enclosure.
Plug this enclosure into a Windows XP vintage computer.
Copy the data to this computer.

Save Win 98 drive for posterity!

Hi Live,

This sort of thing is generally indicative of one of two things. One a failing drive or two a drive controller that isn't supported(or updated) in windows.

If you can reply back with your motherboard make, model and Rev # I will be happy to check if there are any relevant update you may need.

If the updates are not the issure, try using the drive on a newer computer, if it shows up, the motherboard is old and unable to support it properly, if it does the same thing on a newer model chances are it's dying or in it's death throws.

Let me know the above info and how you make out on the newer machine,

Chris

I don't have an instruction manual for my Seagate 160 GB External

Well, if it is a USB Drive, you can locate the drive on your Computer. and using Windows explorer would be a lot easier, click on start, all programs, accessories, Then click Windows explorer, and on the left hand panel, you can then search your drives and located the data that you want to copy and paste. For example, I am going to copy my documents from my (C:) drive, and I then will paste onto my USB flash Disk Drive (J:)..you will see the files go from (C:) to (J:) drive once you start the process...thats it!

I`m unable to install windows 98 in seagate 80 gb ide barracuda hdd

For W98, if you create the bootdisk from within windows, you will need to go here to download the newest version of FDISK.EXE then copy it to the bootdisk, allowing it to overwrite the older version. This way you will have support for larger harddrives.

FDISK LIMITATION WITH 64GB DRIVES:
Why does FDISK not recognize my disk (or RAID array) which is larger than 64GB?

There is a bug in Microsoft's FDISK under Windows 95B, 98 and 98SE that can be corrected by downloading a newer version. See Knowledge Base Article Q263044 for more information.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q263044

When you use Fdisk.exe to partition a hard disk that is larger than 64 GB (64 gigabytes, or 68,719,476,736 bytes) in size, Fdisk does not report the correct size of the hard disk.

The size that Fdisk reports is the full size of the hard disk minus 64 GB. For example, if the physical drive is 70.3 GB (75,484,122,112 bytes) in size, Fdisk reports the drive as being 6.3 GB (6,764,579,840 bytes) in size.

NOTE: This hotfix is not designed for 48-bit logical block addressing (LBA) hard disks, and it is not supported on hard disks larger than 137 GB. However, even if the drive is physically larger than 137 GB, if you create partitions smaller than 137 GB, this FDISK.EXE version will work correctly. (THE FORMAT COMMAND WILL SHOW THE DRIVE AMOUNT IN DOS TO BE OFF THE MARK, BUT WILL BE CORRECT WHEN YOU GET INTO WINDOWS ITSELF)

Direct English Version download:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/Win98/Update/8266R/W98/EN-US/263044USA8.EXE

This package installs the updated Fdisk.exe to the Windows\Command and Windows\Options\Cabs folders, on a computer running Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition. If you are starting a computer from a Windows 98 Startup Disk in order to partition and format the hard disk, you should copy the updated Fdisk.exe from the Windows\Command folder to the Startup Disk, replacing the original Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition version of Fdisk.exe on the Startup Disk.

If your PC is still running Win98 then it probably has a USB version 1.0 port. I don't think the Faster USB version 2.0 devices will work properly even if you have the correct driver - i.e. you have a hardware version conflict. Try Purchasing a USB version 2.0 Daughter board for the PC and plugging the Seagate drive into that iinstead.
