Hello Martin, Your generator might have a low oil pressure shutdown switch. First check the oil level. If oil level is low, fill oil to proper level. If oil level is fine, I would install an auxiliary oil pressure gauge . If oil pressure is normal, I would change the oil sender unit. If oil pressure is low, I would change the oil pump.
Some oil sensors will stop the generator from running if unplugged, IE they close the circuit on oil pressure, some close the circuit on oil pressure. I wouldn't recommend but with it running just take the single wire off the sensor, if it stops immediately then it requires the signal grounded to run. Some ground on low oil.
If the oil level is correct then you might be up for an oil pump. Some engines have an automatic cut-out for low oil pressure or high temperature as a safety mechanism to protect the engine from massive damage.
Yes , if there is an errror on the oil pressure switch or a low oil level then the engine will not be allowed to turn in. Check and refill oil, check the oil pressure switch , it can be clogged and so might not work.
if the oil need frequent topping up it can only dissapear in 2 ways a leak or the engine is very worn and is burning it.
a worn engine is also a cause for oil presssure dropping once the engine has warmed up probably worn main and big end bearings on the crankshaft as you will know oil is thicker when cold so oil pressure is increased
