SOURCE: Bad smell in new Kenmore Elite fridge

Remove the cover grill plate at the bottom front.Just give it a good tug to pull it off.. It is held on by tension clips.. There is were you will find the drain pan..
Not sure if that is where the bad smell is coming from but certainly a good place to check..

If that is not it - put few boxes of Arm & Hammer baking soda in the fridge and freezer..
Give it about 24 to 48 hours..

If that does not work - you may consider contacting the store where you got the fridge for a replacement.. Maybe - just - maybe before it got to your home - a small rodent might have clibmed into it and died..

A new fridge should not have these oderes..

SOURCE: A really bad smell coming from the fridge

I had a similar problem with an unbearable smell, not inside, but outside the refregeration compartment. it was from the defrosted liquid that gets stored in a small open tank at the bottom on the rear side of the fridge. over time , particles settle along with water and gives a rooten smell, cleaning this tank solved it.

Hope this helps,

You should be able to remove the base grill by opening both doors to 90 degrees and pushing down while pulling outwards on the base grill to unlock the top clips, once the top is away roll the base grill toward you and up. From there you should be able to see the pan underneath which should slide out.

Clean it thoroughly and use a mixture of baking soda and water for final cleaning rinse and replace, I also mix some baking soda and water and pour in the bottom of the fridge to allow the mixture to cleanse the drip tube leading to the pan.

Installation is in reverse of removal

My Westinghouse fridge freezer, model WSE6100SF, was affected by a power cut lasting 3 days. It now smells, but not inside. Is there a drip tray under the fridge that collects the water?

yes there is but most are not removeable.... remove the cover in the rear of the fridge, the pan is located around the fan motor that's underneath the fridge... I would try pinesol, bleach or odoban to kill the smell..... good luck

Fridge is clean but has a nasty smell coming out from the back

There may be a tray under the fridge that collects any water from defrosting . It usually evaporates from the compressor fan blowing over it . Remove lower front cover and back cover to access and clean this tray. Unplug unit before attempting this just to be safe. Hope this helps.

How do I remove the plastic drip tray from behind my Wesitnghouse Aurora Fridge Freezer.

we had a really bad smell coming from the back of our westinghouse aurora. and yes found it to be emanating from drip tray at the back. To remove this we had to undo 4 clips at the base of black motor thingy, that the plastic drip box sits on. Then we were able to lift whole thing a bit ,(10mm up and 50mm out, approx) so we could tilt everything forward and sweeze and wiggle tray out. then cleaned with bleach. also we unblocked hole inside fridge that allows water to drip into drip tray at back.

This is the defrost water that collects on the collection tray - white tray on top of motor. Normally over a period of time the water evaporates off but if there is collection of dirt it can smell. So you need to PULL out the tray - use a screw driver to release the lock and the tray will come out which can be cleaned using a water jet and detergent.

syringe out drain hole/pipe with clorine bleach(clorine will gas off and leave no smell after an hour or so)clean out tray with bleach,as it will kill the bacteria that causes the smell, the higher the himidity the more often you will need to clean drain/tray.(any clean water in tray ,use to feed your house plants,

Fridge smell

It sounds as if you may have had a spillage at some stage in the fridge unit and this has gone onto the tray at the rear of the unit at the bottom on top of the motor. There may be some other explanation when you do pull out the fridge to access this tray.It may be easier to clean the tray in position as they can gat damaged if you try to remove them.If so get some soapy water and a sponge then clean out and dry, also some spray dissinfectant in the tray after cleaning will help.

Water leaking into fridge

Unless you have a lot of confidence in your ability as a handy person and plumber, it may be better to leave this to a pro. Here's the story.

When the freezer automatically defrosts, water from the melted ice collects into a tray behind the back panel of the freezer. There is a drain in this tray, and the drain empties into a pvc tube that carries the water down into an evaporation tray that extends from front to back on the bottom right side of the refrigerator. A fan blows air over the evaporation tray to dry the water in the tray before the next defrost cycle.

Over time, the drain tube gets partly clogged with gunk, the water in the upper collection tray doesn't drain completely into the lower tray, and when the defrost cycle ends, the water still in that upper tray freezes. After a few defrost cycles, enough ice forms in the collection tray so it blocks the drain completely, and this plug won't melt during the defrost cycle. Now every time there is a defrost cycle, water collects, overflows, and drips down through the air channel at the back of the fridge into the refrigerator section.

The fix is to clear the drain tube leading from the upper collection tray to the lower evaporation tray. Here's how (if you have the know-how to tackle the job):

First, move the fridge away from the wall, unplug it, and remove the fiberboard panel that runs across the the bottom back. From the front of the fridge pull out the trim grill that runs across the bottom. Locate the evaporator tray on the right, but don't remove it yet.

Empty the freezer, and be sure to safely store the removed items in another freezer, or an insulated cooler, if you can complete the job in an hour or two. Be careful with ice cream and such, which cannolt be allowd to defrost, even partially.

Remove the ice maker if you have one, remove the screws holding down the bottom panel of the freezer, remove it, and remove the screws holding the back panel, and remove it.

Leave the refrigerator door closed, to keep the food in it from spoiling. If this job is going to take you more than an hour or two, move the food in the fridge to another fridge.

Now you need to let the freezer defrost (a hair dryer will make it go faster, but don't let it get wet), and sponge out all the water, There will remain an ice plug in the drain at the bottom of the collection tray at the back. Use hot water to dissolve the ice plug, use a drinking straw inserted into the drain (don't let it drop!) to be sure the ice plug is melted.

You still have to clear the plastic drain tube of collected gunk. This is like snaking out a drain pipe. I found that 8 feet of 1/8 pvc tubing works well. Before you clear the drain tube, remove the lower evporation tray. There is a finger hole at the front. Use it to lift the tray up and forward (be carelful, it may contain water).

Put the pvc "snake" down into the drain in the upper collection tray, and gently work it down through the drain tube. You are done when the snake emerges from the bottom of the drain tube, at the back bottom of the fridge, above where the evaporator tray sits. . Snake up from the bottom, and then back down again from the top, to be sure the drain tube really is clear. Replace the evaporator tray, and slowly pour 2 cups of water into the collection tray at the top, and confirm that it drains quickly and completely into the lower tray.

Empty the lower tray, replace it, and reverse all the disassembly steps.

This is not a permanent fix, because the drain tube could clog again, but should be good for a few years before you have to repeat this operation. At least now you know the cause and the fix, and can deal more effectively with a repair tech, even if you don't tackle the job yourself.

I have a homeking fridge freezer and there is a really bad smell coming from the fridge which is not because of food. i have emptied the fridge and thoroughly cleaned the fridge but the smell is still...

Hi, i have the same problem with my Homeking fridge. Because it is a frost free firdge, there is a little resevoir at the back, with a small little tube leading from the base of the fridge into it. There are 2 screws holding it in place. Unscrew these but keep the resevoir firmly in place as the nasty parmesan-type smell is actually stagnant water and you really really dont want to spill it. Empty it and then what i did was bleach and anitbacterialise the resevoir tray and the little tube thing. Though I had the problem solved but now it is doing it again less than 2 months after this, so I'm going to contact the people who sold it to me. This is how you get rid of the smell though!!
Good luck
