Question about Toshiba Satellite A205-S4639 Notebook

1 Answer

Toshiba Satellite A205 unable to fully shut down

My Toshiba Satellite A205 will not always shut down or restart properly. Sometimes when I shut down my laptop, it will look like it's shutting down normally, but then the screen will just go black. However, the actual computer will still be on and I am unable to restart it or get it to do anything until I remove the battery. After I remove the battery, it will start normally. Though I know removing the battery while it is still running is bad for the machine.
Anyone else have this problem and knows what to do?
I use Windows Vista.

The defragmenter seemed to do the trick. I did a virus scan and nothing showed up, I uninstalled some extraneous programs, and I changed the power options so I could force it to shut down. However, I still had problems until I ran the disc defragmenter. I haven't had the problem since then.

Hi,
possible setting issue.
If you Go to,
start, control panel, power options, (classic view)
have a look in the power options there, set as needed. there is a few, check them all out.

use disc cleanup, defragmenter, delete temp internet files, in tools on menu bar , delete history,

update the Operating system at Microsoft.
update virus protection and run a full scan.

you should be good if no hardware problems.
Regards.

How 2 reboot my toshiba laptop A205-S5000

Reboot means to restart. If you mean this, then simply:
Start > Shut Down > Restart.

If you mean to re-image / restore to factory settings. You will need to restart with the system disc and follow instructions.

Hope to have pointed you in the right direction.

My battery charges but only lasts about 20 minutes once it says it is fully charged. Just purchsed a new battery thinking it was old (laptop is about 3 years old) and the same thing happens.

From what you describe and assuming the new battery was "new", I'd say you have an internal short which is draining the battery over a short period of time. I'd also investigate the accuracy of the battery charge indicator. Download this free utility which will give you a more accurate picture of your battery:
http://www.mioplanet.com/products/batterymeter/

I'm assuming you gave the battery a "commissioning charge" when you bought and used it?
If not, this is something you should do with all new LI batteries. This bit is reproduced from a website that sells batteries for the Toshiba satellite series:

"2. The new Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack needs to be circled (fully discharged and recharged) three to five times to reach its optimum performance.
3. Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery will undergo self-discharging when left unused for a long period of time. Thus, it should always be stored in a fully charged state and kept in a cool, dry and clean place.
4. It is normal if the new Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery gets warm when being charged or used. However, please pay special attention if the battery pack becomes excessively hot. This may indicate there is a problem with the charging circuit of the electronic device. Please consult a qualified technician if necessary.
5. To maintain the optimum performance of Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack, it is highly recommended to circle (fully discharging and recharging) it at least once a month.
6. New batteries are hard to be charged. Sometimes, your electronic device may indicate a fully charged condition about 10 to 15 minutes when Toshiba Satellite a205-s4777 battery pack is being charged for the first time. When this happens, remove the battery pack and let it cool down for about 10 to 15 minutes then repeat the charging procedure. Sometimes, the new Satellite a205-s4777 battery will suddenly refuse to be charged. If this happens, a suggested solution is trying to remove the battery from the device and insert it again. "

My Toshiba laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without any warning. Sometimes it works fine for hours, sometimes it shuts down in 10-15 minutes. And from yestarday it is shetting down after 30seconds after...

  1. The keyboard and the bottom of your laptop are very hot when the laptop is working.
  2. The CPU fans are working all the time at maximum rotation speed and operate much louder than before.
  3. The laptop suddenly shuts down by itself without warning. When it just started, the laptop was shutting down after 1-2 hours and how it shuts down after 5-10 minutes of operation.
  4. The laptop works fine when it runs idle, but shuts down as soon as you start using any memory demanding applications (DVD player, image editing software, video editing software, etc.).

Solution:
If the CPU heatsink is not clogged with dust and lint completely, you can use canned air and just blow it inside the laptop through the openings on the bottom and on the sides. It's nice as a precaution measure, but it might not work if your laptop already has a problem and the heatsink is completely clogged.
  1. Open the laptop case, so you can access the CPU fan and the heatsink. In some cases you can access the heatsink through the latch on the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes you have to open the laptop case all the way down.
  2. Carefully disconnect the fan cables on the system board and remove the fan. If the fan makes unusual sound when it spins (grinding sound), I would recommend to replace the fan.
  3. Clean the fan and the heatsink with compressed air.
  4. I would also recommend removing old thermal grease from the CPU and applying new grease for better heat conductivity.
I decided to use a shop vac to suck the dust out and it worked. I tested it by letting the machine run all night and it worked. It's been a couple of weeks now and I'm glad I did it. I was ready to take the machine apart, now I'm glad I didn't. I'd suggest you use a heavy duty shop vac to clean out the fan and heat sinks first.I agree. Try to fix the problem without taking the laptop apart first but I would recommend using a powerful air compressor instead of a vacuum cleaner.
If your laptop is still under warranty, you can take it to any Toshiba Authorize Service Provider and fix the problem at no charge to you.

Toshiba satellite a205-S5847 cuts off while working

You could have an overheating problem, The CPU shuts down when it overheats and the laptop won't bootup until the CPU has cooled down.
The overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan or the heatsink/fan assembly is clogged with dust which prevents proper cooling.
Check the fan to see it it spins freely, if not (it has a bearing problem) then replace the fan. Also remove and vacuum the dust off the fan and heatsink.

Toshiba Satellite Goes completley off! Black screen, NO POWER!

This problem is likely caused by overheating. The CPU reaches a temp to high and shuts the system down. When you try to turn it on the system is still to hot and it will not let the computer power on. You can try blowing out the fans and heat sink with an air compressor or can of compressed air. If this does not help the problem you may need to have thermal compound reapplied. If that does not fix it it will need a new heatsink/fan/
