Question about Xantrex Technology Xantrex Technologies 813-1000-00 XPower 1000 Watt Inverter
I have the inverter 1000 watts, ran by a 12 v car battery which is charged by a generater, the cables from the battery to the inerter is a foot long, it was working perfectly until we turned it off one night and the next morning when we turned it on the the green light and the red fault light keeped flashing off and on and now its just the red light all we had hooked up was a dvd player which is no more then 50 watts and a 60 watt light bulb, also have a 1800 watt inverter with a simular problem, we tried changing batteries just to make sure it was the battery but that wasn't the problem, we also tested the battery and it is charging very well thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you shortly, thank you, and best regards Shane Synard

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly Charge the batteries before placing the batteries in service.
On a new deep cycle battery you should perform an initial charging cycle. The batteries are dry charged simply by adding electrolytes. Every deep cycle battery manufacturer states this in their instructions:
You should do a trickle charge on each of the batteries individually over an 8 - 10 hour period. This will activate all of the surface area of the battery plates. When the battery is fully charged it should have specific gravity reading of 1.265 using a battery hydrometer / tester. You will get that on a brand new battery but that specific gravity reading is only coming from a very small active / working area on the battery plates. Hence you have a very short working duty cycle at the moment.
After your trickle charging session.... wait 1 hour to test the specific gravity of the battery.
I am certain that if you do an extended INITIAL charging period on all 3 of the batteries that your working duty cycle will return to near normal time periods. Let me know if this does not work. There is more that can be checked. For the moment just do the initial charging session on all 3 batteries "WITHOUT using your inverter" as the charging source.
Once thing to note... if the batteries were ever tipped in excess of 45 degrees in shipment they may be lacking the necessary electrolyte level for the batteries to function normally. I.e if they were tipped and then someone just added distilled water / battery water. The batteries will never perform properly.
Lastly.... if the NEW batteries were serviced with electrolyte and water but never initially charged
then you many have a split level battery electrical level. I.e. the electrolyte and water have never initially mixed properly. The too will cause the symptom you describe. Charging the batteries for an extended time causes bubbles in the battery and does and excellent job of properly mixing initial electrolyte levels.
Probably more information than you needed but, anyone using deep cycle batteries for the first time should be aware of the above.

please check the voltage your generator is supplying to the to the inverter because a high voltage and frequency can make the relays in the inverter to make clicking sounds,and also do not allow your inverter batteries to run completely low before you charge it

i hope you hooked it up to the battery the right way around??? if not its just poped its clogs,,,,,

Hi, well you see this happened because the "Load" on the Inverter was more than it could handle. You see the Inverter senses the resistance of the batteries to determine how flat they are and how much current to put into the batteries, if anything else is connected to said batteries, that will simply muck up the sensing,and as has happened in your case destroyed the inverter.
I have serviced many inverters and the most likely failure that would emit sparks etc is failed output semiconductors.
One cannot really use an inverter to charge the batteries, like you did, UNLESS the batteries were completely isolated from the Generators wiring, and even then, your inverter, still may not have enough power to do this. As this is NOT what it was designed for.
Really an inverter is used to step up the Voltage from 12/24 Volts DC, batteries to 120/230 V AC.
Now again, one could use it, to then have a Battery Charger plugged into that, and use the output from the battery charger to charge some "Other" batteries, but that seems a bit roundabout.
Yes the Inverter will charge it's OWN batteries, BUT ONLY if that is the ONLY thing connected to the inverter.

Your Freedom 458 has died. At this point, you need to isolate the batteries from the inverter / charger unit to prevent further risk of fire.
It is normal, with the fried charger, for the battery voltage to plummet even while plugged in. There is no converter to maintain them. When you start your rig, the alternator on the engine is charging the batteries. With the rapid drop in battery voltage, your inverter likely is shorted.
Remove the main battery fuse between the inverter and batteries, as well as unplug / turn off the breaker to the inverter /charger. Take your coach to the nearet service center, as it may still be under (partial?) warranty.
