I guess you don't need me to tell you you've got a major electrical problem!  Question is, what do you need by way of help?  At the very least you will need new carbon brushes for the motor, and it's quite likely that you may need a complete new motor.  Trouble is that Dysons generally are not easy for the amateur to get in to and Dyson do not make technical manuals available.  It's a while since I had to work on a DC14 and I can't remember how to get at the motor.  The best I can do is spell out your options: 1. Try to do it yourself and risk breaking something, 2. wait for a reply on this site from someone else (although to judge from the number of unanswered Dyson problems here, you may wait for ever),  3. take it to a specialist repairer or call Dyson direct for advice (but they won't give you any guidance for doing the work yourself).
Good luck.  If you need to ask specific questions, post again here and I'll help if I can.

I just cleaned out my Dyson animal, which had no suction. Now, all put back together, the suction is there but the machine makes a long lasting sound when I shut it off.

Hey, It's Jim with Crucial Vacuum,

If you're hearing an odd sound that is somewhat prolonged after you turn off your vacuum it be that your belt or brush roll needs replacing.

If you have suction and there aren't any clogs in your vacuum your belt might be worn and loose, which could give off an odd noise as it slows down along with the brush roll upon you turning off the vacuum.

Does your Dyson DC14's belt lack tension? It may be hitting the brush roll at the wrong angle. Same deal with the brush roll itself. Turn your vacuum over and take a look at the bristles. Are they loose or worn down? These are indications that its time to change these two parts of your Dyson DC14.

If these parts aren't in top shape or attached properly they're bound to make a number of odd noises.

We do offer low cost high quality replacement parts for Dyson DC14's. They can be found at the below link:

My Dyson dc14 vacuum is making flapping noise and loosing power, strong burning smell

If the air flow is blocked, then yes you will get overheating of the motor and a funny smell. One approach is to remove the part closest to the motor, and if the motor then runs okay, the blockage must be downstream. Perhaps there is an online manual that explains how it comes apart? Another thought is that the bearings might be going bad. Might be worth taking this vacuum to a repair man.

yes it can be fixed, the brushes on the motor are worn out. take it to a vacuum shop and they'll replace the brushes at a fraction of the cost of a new machine

Dyson dc14 died, no power after burning smrll

It sounds like the motor has overheated and has now been irrepairable damaged.
The motor has a built in over-current trip to protect itself (and you if it seriously overheated and caught fire). This normally automatically resets itself, however if the motor has just about had it, the moment it is switched on, it just trips again.

The primary cause of motors overheating is that the filters are not cleaned or replaced frequently enough. Dont be fooled by Dyson's "lifetime filters". They need to be regularly cleaned and replaced when necessary.

Replacement motors are avaible on eBay for about £25, however repalcing one requires good DIY skills and tools.

Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com and see if you feel you can tackle it yourself. If not, take it to a repair shop or call the Dyson helpline.

You sucked up something that stopped the brush from turning. This made the belt slip causing a burning smell.

the sparks are coming off the armature. either the carbon brushes need to be replaced or the complete motor.

Dyson DC14 all floors.

sept 30,08 bought dc14 all flloor. After 3 to 4 uses it started making lots of noise when on carpet setting. I examined the roller brush and it was cracked at one end. I returned it Oct 13 ,08 and got another dc 14 all floor. Now this one after 2 uses has the same problem only a larger crack in the brush and a small piece of the brush broke off. Very dissapointed.
