Pixma MX850 I'm trying to print, but the black doesn't seem to be working. All the cartridges are full, I've done the cleaning thing... I don't know what's wrong. Black print is coming out purple.

Printer copies in gray not black how do i get it to copy darker

  • Marissa1234 May 05, 2009

I'm trying to print and the print quality is extremely bad. Especially on the plain black. I've tried cleaning (3 times) and deep cleaning once and nothing seems to help. When I print a nozzle check, the entire first part of the test comes out pretty much blank. What should I do?

I was working on the Pixma mx850 for 3 weeks now. I have found that you need to reset the using back to factory default. On the display look for the "printer head" cleaning and alignment. Go through the steps that it gives you for printer head cleaning. Print a test page. have you tried to copy in "black/whte" and not color? that will use the large black and not the small black cartrdge. Try a couple of black circles in "paint" if your running windows XP. make a test page of your own and print it.

It usually is because it either cannot use the black ink or it is empty. It will try to make black with the other 3 colors which turns out to be closer to purple than black. Try reinserting the large black ink tank. Try a Black deep cleaning maintenance and see if the black prints when you then print an ink test (Nozzle Check ).

Canon mx860 printer not using ink from PGBK 220

Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.

Yellow cast when printing from canon mx850 - I see this problem has been described before, where do I find the answer?

The way inkjet printers work is they mix the limited amounts of colours available from the cartridges, by printing in layers, to get the desired colour. A lot of the time when it appears off colour its because one of the other colours isn't printing properly to show create the correct 'mix'.
This can either be because the colour is low, or because there is a blockage somewhere. I would suggest removing the cartridges & reinserting them, then performing maintenance which i believe can be done on the printer itself by pressing the menu button, finding 'maintenance/settings' pressing OK, then going to 'maintenance', followed by doing a 'cleaning procedure'.

If this doesnt help, try the same thing but choosing deep cleaning.
Hope this helps.

I have a Canon MX850, I don't understand why my big black ink cartridge is full and it uses only the small one, how can I change to use the big one?

The printer use big PGI-5bk cartridge to print documents and text. When you print photos or some other pictures printer use small CLI-8bk cartridge because this cartridge has a photo ink.If you print text and it print blank page that mean the nozzle on PGI-5 cartridge is clogged.Try cleaning test on maintenance menu on printer.

Canon MX850 willnotprint from Large Black Ink Cartridge - PGI-5BK

Ink Carts do act finicky at times. Especially Canon carts.
In many cases, the ink carts have a small fuse built into the back of the cartridge that opens up if the cart has been removed for any reason. Replacement Carts come with the fused portion reset, thus when you insert it into the printer, it works great. If the cart is FULL, it still may not be observed as full or new by the Printer itself. Best way is to use a new cart, not necessarily a Canon Brand. Use an inexpensive company like

I have the canon mx850 printer, and it has run out of black ink in one of the cartridges. The image that comes on screen shows that there is another full black ink cartridge. Will the printer...

It will not switch over. Two seperate black cartridges are needed. One for color and one is used for monochrome. Lift the front of the unit under the LCD panel with the unit powered on, wait five seconds the cradle will slide over, gently press the tab at the top of the cartridge and lift up and out. Do not use the grey lever to the right as it is used for print head cartridge replacement only

Black ink print failure after cartridge replaced

The Edge, -Clean the electrical contacts on the printer where the cartridge connects with alcohol. After it dries clean the same contacts with a regular pink, non-abrasive pencil eraser making sure you remove all the debris when done. -Its also possible there is an air bubble preventing the flow of ink. You can try inserting a full cartridge of ink in the printer and letting it sit overnight then running a nozzle clean job or two. Another alternative if you have a syringe you may want to try gently forcing ink into it. If you?re really desperate you can try drilling a small hole into the cartridge to give gravity feeding a hand. BE WARNED the air hole will let ink flow pretty well and you run the chance of making a mess. Before you pull the cartridge out of the printer make sure you cover the hole with tape so the ink doesn?t make even more mess. -Check the cartridge alignment making sure the contacts are mating to the printer. -If it still doesn?t work I would try cleaning your nozzles. Even though I doubt you have clogged nozzles its worth a try because of the following: If you search the Internet you?ll find that this specific model is know for failing to print some or all colors after about 1 ½ to 2 years of use, even with Epson inks. Most of the posts I?ve seen blame it on clogged nozzles but I suspect a good number of them, like yours, have another explanation for their failure. Ink jet printers use resistors to create heat to create a bubble in the ink to eject it out of the nozzle (Bubble jet) or in the case of Epson, vibrating crystals push ink into and out of the nozzles (piezoelectric). We?ve already cleaned the electrical contacts and cleaned the nozzles so what remain are defective nozzles, short between the nozzle and the controller board or a defective controller board. Since the printer is only worth 1 or 2 hundred dollars repairs at a shop or buying these repair parts can easily exceed ½ its cost. Hope something here works for you, I just recently had to toss a great printer too. Let us know what happens and please don?t forget to rate the posting.
