Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have a Maxtor One Touch 2 external hard drive. My computer can see it but I cannot run backup as the set up restore page does not come up. I can run diagnostics etc under drive management menu, but when I go to the restore page it either doesn't come up or it takes a very long time. I have run registry checks and fixed a number of problems etc, anti virus and anti malware. I have run health checks for ther drive and all are OK. The system worked up to last week where I had 77 restore points. If and when I do get the set up and restore section of the main menu to come up, it indicates there are no restore points. When I click on this part of the menu nothing happens.

I have run Malware Bytes, Adaware, Spybot, Cure It and also reloaded the Maxtor software a couple of times. I have also run RegCure, but nothing seems to work.

I wil rerun Spybot, but Spybot has never found any infection on my computer as long as I have had it.

MalwareBytes and Cure It have detector viruses before.

I haven't received a response to my last statement with respect to anti virus and anti malware programmes.

Please go to this page and download the appropriate software for your drive and install it. it does sound like the software that comes with the one touch may be corrupted. this page does say seagate...but seagate bought the maxtor company.

If the system worked up to last week where I had 77 restore points, and now you are unable to restore then you probably have a virus or a malaware.
Download spybot below , install and run a full check.
If that does not work I can give you further instructions but you may need to reinstall the system.
Spybot is more powerful than regular antivirus, do a full system scan.
Download below.

You indicated that ..."most of the drive's capacity is used."
That may be your problem. When you make a backup you need room for the software to create temporary files before completeing the backup. These temp files are deleted once the backup is complete. There's no real rule regarding the amount of extra space to have available, but I use 10% of the total size of the backup and have not had any problems. I'm also backing up to Maxtor One Touch II.

I want to backup my computers (4) and have maxtor partitioned and used at purchase time, but now when I connect it I get no prompts or choice of hard drive to back up. How do I go about back up?

You have a varity of option to do your backup depending on the type of backup you want to do.
1 Documents and folders
To backup your document and folders you can just copy the Documents and folders to the external drive.
You could also use the backuo feature of the Operating system you have like windows backup to backup your documents and folders.
2 System backup of your system.
You can not use a copy accross to do the complete backup of your system. You can use the windows backup to do this or a third party backup software.
Windows Back for Windows 7.
Click on Start ----- Controll Panel ----- System and Security ------- Set up Backup ------ Select where you want to save your backup ( the external Drive you connected to your system) in the box ------ Next ----- Choose the files or drive you want to backup and click next ------- Review your backup settings and save settings and run back.

This will save your files to the external drive you added to your system.

No, you haven't lost anything. When you restored your software, you only restored the factory stuff. You'll need to reinstall the driver for the external hard drive. After you do that, your external drive and data should be accessible.

Maxtor only backing up certain files instead of entire computer.

Your system is backiing up only the changes or deltas from the last backup. If you truly want to backkup everything again, you must opent the one touch backup utility and set the full backup option. You can find the one touch program under the Progams list on the Start menu.

Maxtor One Touch II - installation Software

I have a disk that worked for me and I am running windows xp. I also have the website address that is supposed to have the 98 drivers which could work perhaps. http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Maxtor_OneTouch_Drive_USB/Win98SE_Driver&vgnextoid=b07d8b9c4a8ff010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

Guess you could try them first and if that doesnt work I could perhaps make a backup of the disk/package/mail/ worth anything?
