Murph!

Good job on the coupler and agitator cam! Way to go!

Now for the grinding noise... I assume that it wasn't making that noise before you worked on it, right? (except for the noise it makes when the coupler has failed. It make a kind of grinding noise, too.) So I'll assume that this is a different grinding noise.

2 things will cause this in "spin".

1.) Something is caught between the inner and outer tubs. Since you've had the cabinet off, you know that there is a perforated steel inner drum (the one with holes in it) and a plastic outer drum to contain the water. I've seen nails, paper clips, etc... get through the holes of the inner tub and get caught there. When the unit goes into spin, the object will spin along with the inner tub and rub the outer tub making a scraping/grinding noise.
To find out if this is the problem, remove the agitator again... yes the entire top and bottom portions of it. Now CAREFULLY inspect the inner tub and look for anything that may be stuck in the holes. It'll be small, so use a good flashlight.

2.) The "drive block" has cracked/broken and allowed the inner tub to drop to the point that it's grinding on the outer tub base. This one is a bit more intense than the fix above. If you would, please verify that there's nothing in the inner tub before we proceed to the next step.
Note----> I don't doubt that you can't handle the next repair. It's just that I want to eliminate the simple stuff before moving to the more complex stuff.

Let me know what you find, OK? Also... BEFORE you remove the agitator, look at the distance between the bottom of the agitator and the base of the inner tub. Use your finger for measurement. You should NOT be able to fit the tip of your finger between the two. If you can, write back 'cause then we'll be going into the drive block (#2) repair.

Whirlpool ETW4100SQ washer. Unit stopped agitating, grinding noise appeared. Tub is loose, agitator is free, was able to empty the drum.

Hello,

while your washer will draining, in addation to the noise during the agitate cycle is it making a similar noise during the drain/spin cycle?
if that is the case the motor coupler is broken
i have attached a youtube video that will show you step by step how to replace the coupler

Kenmore commercial washer making grinding noise

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.82403140

Also see the Whirlpool / Kenmore service manual for top load direct drive washers.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor and transmission. YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMOVE THE AGITATORS OR TUB.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137&osCsid=1051095663c7f2d5997fa53b976529d6

I had the same problem with major gear grinding during the spin cycle and this solved it.

Within the transmission are a set of plastic cams that raise the agitator gear when moving into the spin cycle. If the cams are worn, the gear won't lift high enough (about 1/18") and the gears will grind.

Assuming that you know how to remove the cabinet, agitator (you don't need to remove the tub), pump, motor and transmission the agitator cam and follower use the same whirlpool part number 62580/01. This is a plastic set used to raise the agitate gear on the shaft.

I had the same problem with gear grinding and this solved it.

Pull the transmission.

Remove the clutch (the spring holding the clutch to the spin pinion is a bear to replace.

Remove the 8 transmission screws carefully, the transmission is full (15 oz.) of 80-90 weight oil.

Remove the transmission cover.

Pull off the spin pinion.

Push down on the agitate spring and remove the spring clip. Note where is attaches to the main shaft.

The two plastic agitate cam parts pull right off. Don't lose the washer on top of the cams.

Replace the cams, washer, spring and clip, pinion, oil (assuming you drained the oil first), cover and clutch parts.

Line up the transmission so that the release cam on the brake drum will snap onto the clutch spring retaining clip and put all parts back in the washer.

The basic tools are screwdriver, small socket set with up to a 1/2" socket, vice grips or good pliers (to remove and replace clips)

Be sure to align the holes on the Motor Coupler correctly or the motor and transmission won't fit together correctly.

Following is also the Whirlpool parts list for their commercial top load direct drive washers that has a better description of the cams.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/2550f737b3129b0c85256b0600504738/$FILE/787772%20%234.pdf

It is a bit of a messy job but much ($10 vs $170 for a transmission) less than having a service person replace the transmission.

Be sure to study the Service manual so that you can see exactly how the cams work.

While you've got the motor and transmission out, you should check the Motor couplers for wear.

Won't spin, makes clunking noise, drains fine

If it agitates fine , with normal noise , drains with lid closed , then the problem is probably the transmission .

WILLNOT SPIN OR AGGITATE/IT WILL DRAIN

Just because the rubber part of the coupler isn't shreded doesn't mean that the plastic parts are not broke... There are three stems that protrude from the plastic parts of the drive coupler, and mesh with the rubber section of the coupler... the stems may be broke off... If you smell rubber burning then I would say almost 99% of the time it's a bad drive coupler...If the coupler is not broke and the rubber section is alright then you have a bad transmission... Most likely the main drive gear is bad... Since you said that you can spin the tub by hand, indicates that the brake system is alright, and nothing is caught between the inner and outer tubs... You can rule out a lid switch problem, cause the washer would agitate even with a broken lid switch, but it would not spin..since the machine make any kind of different sound when you run it Like a high pitch squeal or grinding noise?
check the lid switch see if it's not broke... wasn't the lid switch, but I got to thinking it will agitate at the first part of the wash cycle, but when it goes into the slower speed wash, if your lid switch is broke, then it won't agitate or spin...

Kenmore washer will not agitate or spin & makes grinding noise

CHECK THE MOTOR coupler located between the motor and then transmission this will be a good place to start if you lean back the washer and look from the bottom you will see a thing between the motor and the tranny that looks like a oreo cookie check and see if that is broken in any way
