Question about HP Compaq Presario SR1650NX (SR1650NXED881AA) PC Desktop

3 Answers

Cannot perform system restore, must remove files or perform disk deframenter, defrag cannot perform due to not enough disk space have 9% of 12% needed, msg remove files then perform. D drive on Compaq Presario SR1650NX is where HP keeps original operating system all files hidden, C drive is 250g with lots of space and all software and programs are there, how do I get back the 3% space on d drive that i never filled up, how did it grow? Do I just switch system restore to C drive only and forget about D? or should I try to use my recovery disks and get D back, won't this mess up C drive and programs?? Have already run multiple virus scans with 5 different tools, left over software removal tools, nothing detected outside of cookies. D drive somehow has become full which is I assume the restore drive or where HP hides their preloaded software, computer runs smooth just cannot get to perform system restore, I can create a restore point but it will not restore to that point. The only option I have been told so far to do is change the drive designation for restore to C and wipe out d drive and reload recovery disks, I'm not sure thats the answer and I definately do not want to mess up my system. I have no software issues or incompatability issues with windows or internet explorer.

When trying to perform disk defragmenter, D drive msg says it needs 12% free space to perform currently shows I have 9% remaining, need to delete files then perform defrag. D drive is 750meg, I believe D is partition of C, D files are all hidden the only way I have been able to view files listed in D is thru Advance System Care. Otherwise cannot view, and even if I could concerned about deleting anything for fear of removing files needed to run. No I am not trying to restore to originalk factory settings, I believe I would have to reload all my hardware, drivers and updates again which would be a nightmare, just trying to make sure system is operation properly as I have currently been hired to work from home using my PC signing in to a Network via Citrix, employement requirements is to make sure everything is running properly, cannot have any file sharing software. I maintain Norton Anti-Virus, and Webroot Spyware, I also run Spybot, AVG, Advanced System Care, Malware Bytes and CC Cleaner. PC is kept clean. I have tried deleting old restore points and limiting space used for restore points but this seems to have no effect. Stuck can't figure this one out.

What do any of you think about "RegCure - Free Download - System Restore Reinstall" ?? Do you think this program might be something I should try or will it do more harm than good, any advice on this or how I would get a list of files I shouldn't touch??

Do you have a lot of pop ups?

  • baron884 May 11, 2010

What size is the D partition. If this is where the factory restore image is stored then it did not grow as you say however other files and data may have been added to the D drive. When you say system restore are you trying to restore to the origoanl factory settings i.e. from the image on the D drive or are you using system restore via OS?

Sound like you have a virus onboard.......System restore can be blocked by viruses. (stops you from going back b4 they were injected) If you have a lot of space avaliable on your hard drive it should be able to restore...(compaq's use a type of setup that a part of the drive C:\ (drive D:\) is partioned off just for restore and other things) Thats the drive you have to backup first.....D

You have 2 options.......if you use the recover disk it may or may not have the option for repair. If it has the repair option (which will not erase and user files) then do it but if it does not then you will lose all data and a reformat will be done. You can use C: for backup but if your C: becomes corrupted then so will your backup files. You may want to save all user files to CD and reformat.

When you say that 3% of your drive space has been taken up without you loading files on to the drive, this makes me think you may have a virus on one or both drives. If your antivirus software isn't detecting anything try a third party (free) online scan. Make sure you disable your installed antivirus software before beginning the scan. Kaspersky.com or TrendMicro.com offer good scans that automatically clean most infected files.
If there is a virus present it won't do you any good to simply restore the C drive only.

To slow

Computer slowdowns have several factors.

How much memory do you have?

If its 256 or below, try adding or upgrading it to 512 mb or more. Having insufficient memory causes your computer to take some space of your hard disk as a substitute, which is a lot slower than the memory ram.

Also check how much space is available on your hard disk. About 15% of the hard disk space must be freed to prevent slowdown.

Use the Disk Cleanup tool to clean some unneeded files. Go to My Computer, then right-click the drive you want to clean up, then click Properties, and click Disk Cleanup.

Try also to defrag your files to lessen the time for the access arm of your hard disk to search/read a file. To defrag your hard disk (or other storage device), go to My Computer, then right-click the drive you want to defrag, click on Properties, then tools, and click Deframent now. Analyze first so you will know if you should defrag the volume, then defrag if necessary. Do this every month to prevent too much fragmentation of files.

Scan for virus and spyware, becuase most of them take hard disk space, memory and have high CPU usage, thus making your system slow even there is no program running. For free anti virus, try AVG. For anti-spyware, try SpyBot S&D.

Also make sure that your computer is properly ventilated. Heat could also limit the performance of your computer.
