Question about Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera
I have the error 05 problem. I've removed the hotshoe, played around with the plastic switch, tightened everything back in place. No fixa the problem.
I had the same err 05 problem on my canon 350d. But there was no need to remove or open anything! If you have the camera in front of you looking at the lens, you can see a tiny black switch hidden under the flash. On the right side where the flash is attached to the body you can find a fine black piece of plastic sticking out of the camera body (smaller than 2mm. This switch can easily get stuck with some dust (or a grain of sand in my case)
Carefully clean it (with an ear stick) so it can go up down again as the flash goes open or is closed. (It somehow serves as a mechanical sensor)
This solved my error 05. Remember that this is just a general Flash error indication and there could be another problem triggering the warning.

I have been working with this very problem on my father's camera. I tracked the problem to a liquid of some sort had splashed the camera at some point and had gotten into the small switch that is near the base of the hinge that tells the camera that the mast is extended. The switch could also get gummed up with dust or other things as well. It does require a full dismantling of the camera to work around on the inside of the prism. The take apart is not an easy task to complete and there are quite a few screws that need to be put back in the same place. The camera now properly extends the mass and registers it without the annoying "err 05" warning. Not suggesting this repair to anyone that isn't extremely familiar with dealing with delicate cabling that are usual found inside devices such as these. With all the suggestions here the usual disclaimer if you break it more when working on it you have no one to blame but yourself.

The problem is not in the hot shoe area but in the locking unlocking mechanism for the pop up flash. Situated on the inside of the top cover which has to come off completely so that you can adjust the position of the unlocking mechanism ( or replace it , but not the entire top cover ). Camera not releasing the pop up flash and goes into error mode.

I've been struggling with this one for days now. It took a combination of resetting the camera (by removing and re-installing the battery), then applying gentle but steady pressure on the left side of the flash toward the right while keeping the manual flash button pressed.
