Question about Heating & Cooling

Burner does not ignite intermittently though everything checks out by technician

About 6 weeks ago, my Trane furnace blower was running and pumping cold air as the burner was not firing. The technician who came checked everything out and decided it was the thermostat so he put in a new thermostat for me. Now, the same thing happened again. The thermostat was set at 71, the blower was running and the house was at 68 degrees and dropped to 66 degrees. I turned off the system at the thermostat so it wasn't blowing cold air on me. When I turned it back on, the burner came on and now it seems ok. What could the problem be that causes this to be intermittent? Thanks for your help. It's 38 degrees today!

We did do that but it seems that either severe wind is causing the flue to not work properly and causing the unit to overheat or we have a dirty electric problem in our area. Thanks for your suggestion!

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

Trane xe 90 burner wont light

Bad igniter? Could be a safety control telling the furnace not to light. Check to see if the furnace has a diagnostic indicator. If so count the flashes and then check the diagnostics list inside the door or in the owners manual. This should narrow the problem down.

This is possible, however it is possible they are missing something simple. I hope you can follow along.
1) Is this a Sealed Combustion Furnace, meaning you cannot get to the burners even after you remove the Door Panels?

2) If yes, is this furnace vented with pvc/plastic piping?
3) If yes, do both pipes go outside?
4) If yes then try this.

1) Turn the main power off to the furnace
2) Remove the Door Panel to the burner section.
3) Turn Furnace back and turn the thermostat all the way up.
4)Look into the burner compartment and tell me if the igniter glows red. If it does and the goes out with the burners not coming on.

5) If you feel comfortable or know of someone that is.
6) Turn the furnace off, remove the panel that conceals the burner compartment.

7) Turn the furnace on, if the igniter glows red and the burners ignite. Your problem is in the venting system. Most likely the intake pipe if it goes outside. It could be plugged or something is blocking it. If the burners do not ignite the next thing to make sure that is happening is that the Exhaust blower is operating and you can feel air outside where the pipe terminates. If you it is but no very strong, then your problem could be the inducer motor or to small of vent pipe.

If you could, send me some information about how it starts up
1) Main blower may come on and shut off, make sure the blower runs in on position 1st then back to Auto position. If it does not, you have another problem.

2) The Exhaust blower should come on next
3) About 17secs. later the igniter should glow red.
4) You will here the gas valve make a click
5) The Burners will ignite
6) The flame sensor rod on the far left hand side of the burner will keep the burner lit. If it is dirty the burners will shutdown.
7)About 90secs. later the main blower will come on.

Are your air filters relatively new? Is a bird nesting in your units combustion air exhaust pipe? Does your draft inducer motor run before and after the gas has ignited? Check and confirm these 3 things first. Good Luck!

If this is a direct vent unit, check the PVC air intake at the furnace for debris. There is a screen at the furnace connection and as cold air enters into the burner chamber it frosts up on it. If there is any blockage, it restricts the air inlet. If the furnace ignites, it melts the frost and works fine. It happens mostly at night. Let me know if you find this. Thanks.

(HVAC) Furnace Not Igniting Quickly

Make sure a back draft in the flue is not happening. Wind can blow it out until the flue heats up. The flame sensor may not be close enough to the burner flame. It may be weak and need to be replaced or if its an optical one it may be dirty and not see the flame very well. Its not wasting much gas but it puts extra wear and tear on the gas controls, is noisy, and, as you said, blows cold drafty air. A gas control system that has issues of any kind is not real safe. It needs to get fixed.
