If you can see the data with the use of a flashlight, that is surely the inverter.

The thing that would be done by a technician at repair shop is keeping laptop on and partially disassembled, with display front frame off and keyboard and upper cover removed. When the laptop turns off, he will test the inverter AC out, an the inverter DC input, If inverter has regular AC out and there is no light, check backlight contacts, and eventually replace backlight. If there is no AC out , test DC input, if there is no voltage in, then test the inverter wiring harness to mainboard reading continuity on wires and testing contacts on motherboard.
The testing is quite risky , as the inverter is an high voltage board, and must be done by an experienced reparer, taking all safety measures required.

T42p display lights for a couple of minutes through startup then goes dark

But fan still runs, and it sounds like the harddrive is spinning?

Diagnose.

Do you have a VGA monitor available?
You can use a CRT type, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect the VGA monitor cable to the left side of the ThinkPad T42. (DisplayPort)

2) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

By factory default, the display should show on the external VGA monitor.
If not;

There are at least three display options available;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY.

Press, and hold down on the Fn key, and at the same time tap once on the F7 key. The F7 key is the Display Toggle-Over key.

3) Good display on external monitor?
Problem is the video cable, or inside the Display Assembly.

Since the display goes dark after a couple of minutes, I can tell you the problem is the screen Inverter, or Backlight.
(Inside the Display Assembly)

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the fault is a bad screen Inverter.

Primer:
An LCD screen cannot produce light. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, or a series of LED's.
(Light Emitting Diode)

The Lenovo ThinkPad T42 series of Notebook PC's, uses a single CCFL for a Backlight,

http://www.screentekinc.com/IBM__ThinkPad__T42-series-laptops-lcd-screens.shtml

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

[Average thickness is 2mm. That is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch.
Average length is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height ]

A screen Inverter converts the power from the laptop, for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

(Older versions of backlighting that used a series of LED's, used a screen Inverter. Newer versions do not. For these replace the LCD screen)

A screen Inverter and an LCD screen are a MATCHED unit. Make sure you get the correct screen Inverter, or LCD screen, when buying.

Primer over.

My Screen goes black fter a few minutes

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :- To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions. Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.

Laptop LCD display problem

The backlight is the light bult that illuminates the screen. Before it finally goes out completely it will turn your screen a pink color on startup (and then usually become brighter and the pink fades). It is also possible that the backlight, also called a Cold Cathode Flourescent Light, CCFL, died an immediate death. But usually they take a while and signal with the "PINKNESS" first. If you found that your computer is working just fine connected to an external monitor (and you moved the base of your laptop around while connected to the monitor to be sure and left the computer on for a long time) then you have verified that the screen is the problem. It is usually two things: (1) the inverter, a circuit board that increases the voltage to supply the LCD which eats around 700 volts (yeah baby); or (2) the backlight itself. The first problem is a relatively easy and inexpensive fix. You can find how to replace an inverter by downloading the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T40, T41, etc., from IBM/Lenovo's site. Replacing the backlight itself, a bulb that is like a strand of speghetti and even more delicate, is a tougher job. I would suggest purchasing a replacement screen in that event rather than replacing the backlight yourself. (The HMM probably does not show you how to replace the backlight/CCFL as it is a potentially dangerous job.) That suggestion assumes you can find a cost-effective replacement screen and do not mind opening the TP and putting the new screen in. At least look at the HMM to see what is involved. Good luck.

IBM thinkpad t41 screen goes blank after being used for about 5 minutes. Could it be a motherboard issue?

If the machine keeps running it might be your inverter or your backlight for your lcd screen. Next time it happens take a flashlight and hold it at an angle near your screen. I f you can see an image it's your screen that's having the problem. If the laptop is shutting down after 5 mins it could be a heat issue. Make sure all the vents are clear and the fan is running. If all those things are working then it could be your motherboard.

with a multimeter verify if you have power in inverter, if not, try to connect the inverter to another power supply for testing.

Black screen

there three issues with think pads that are common for this issue

1 bad inverter board
2 bad ccfl lamp in the lcd screen
3 bad video chip or other issue on the mother board

Inverters are not hard to replace and can be done by most people with patience and soft touch
ccfl bulbs require service techs with specialized skills to replace them, the lcd has to e taken apart or completely replaced
motherboards or video cards are much more complex issues and need service centers or techs with the requisite skills

IBM T40 Laptop screen goes black, will not come back

First of all, you have to check whether you can see video signal with surrounding light tilting the screen.
If you can see dim image, all you have to do is replace back-light inverter or fix it. Usually, the fuse is open and you can connect it by simple soldering.
If you can't see dim image, it is another problems.
Give it a try.
