My tv has been acting up for over a year now. I plug it in and it worked for a week or so then the red power light would come on but wouldn't turn blue and actually turn ON. I moved and after the move I plugged it in to try it again and it worked. Afew weeks later it did the same thing again.

My toshiba 40sl412u turns on for a second then off

You more than likely have faulty capacitors on the power board. the caps won't let the power build up.

the general steps are
  1. unplug your tv.
  2. lay it glass side down on a soft thick blanket to protect the glass.
  3. remove the rear panel.
  4. identify the board with the power connector.
  5. remove it.
  6. find replacements for the electrolytic caps, the cylinders looking ones.
  7. unsoldier, then resoldier the caps.
  8. put the TV back together
This will generally cost $10 for the caps and less than $50 for the soldiering equipment. You tube has a vast number of videos on this.

a tv repair shop locally should cost less than $100. should be even less if you remove the board and bring it to them. there are companies that you can send the board in and they will repair and send it back.

Mind you $100 is cheep VS a new tv. I replaced the caps in mine for 10 bucks and a few hours of time, but I'm a highly qualified electronics repair tech.

My hisense LCD tv won't turn on, every so often it

It could be a number of things, mostly power board and main board.
Power is relatively easy to rule out if you can make simple voltmeter readings.
Look for "how to test" at and there'll be plenty of examples.
Your power board is most likely not going to be there, but the principles are the same for all boards.

you have a faulty power supply
this may be as simple as a few caps but unless you have worked on electronics have someone replace them or the power supply for you

Gateway 500XL .. sounds like the Power Supply was making a scratching grinding noise.. off/on... I first thought it was the CPU fan and changed it .. not solved... the PC just shut down... maybe...

Very easy to replace power supply as this is most likely the reason for the shut down due to heat. Make sure when ordering new power supply or buying from a computer parts store that you do not relay on them to give you the right one, you have to do your homework, after you get it do not unplug everything from the mother board, take your time and make sure that when you unplug you know where to plug back and wear anti static bracelet.

Our monitor keeps flashing on and off

OK, you have a UltraSharp Dell Monitor.
If the unit powers up and the image on the screen flashes on and off, you have had a power surge and the main power board will need to have most of the Caps. replaced or it may be better to have the entire board replaced.
The power board repair is not a hard job but finding the wright person to do it, may be harder than having it replaced.
Should be about 5 caps. will need to be removed and replaced.
One hour in labor $35.00 USD and maybe $5.00 in parts.
Or you can order the board on Ebay for about $35-40.00. and 1 hour to replace and re-assemble.
If the unit is under warr. Don't give them information, they will give you a RMA and make arrangements to have it shipped to them for repair. If you say Power Surge, they won't warranty.
Good luck.

Just a half picture on the screen

1. Remove the rear cover 2. remove the perforated large shield on the main board housing (almost in center). 3. Unplug the right top fan and temp sensor plugs ( two small plugs at the top of the main board). 4. Remove screwsthat secure the main board housing, there is also four screws by the video inputs. Do not unplug the board, just gently pull it away 6 to 8 inches. 5. Remove the cover with the Top fan attached (more screws). 6. Now the scan board for the top half of the screen is exposed. The board has four large heat sinks with two large Electrolytic aluminum caps next to each heat sink. 7. The problem caps are at the very top right side of the scan board C192 Nichicon 220 uf next to the IC, the other cap is C120 100UF on the lower side of the IC next to a heat sink. I replaced them without taking the board out. C192 is the one that failed, the other one tested OK but I replaced both.
I got the caps from they are 69 cents each, the Mouser part number for the 220Uf is: 647-UUD1C221MCL1GS (Nichicon 220uFm 16V 6.3x7.7 mm surface mount); the 100uF is:647-UUD1E101MCL (Nichicon 100uF 25V 6.3x7.7mm), both are 105 degree C. I bought two extra spares in case I need them for the future.
Reassemble the unit in the reverse order and you are done. Note if you test it without closing everything, make sure you have the main board shield back on, otherwise the screen will bleed due to the noise from the board. good luck! mine has been working fine.. just like new..

Power supply most likely... It's a common problem with this particular model and we've seen quite a number of them for exactly what you're describing.
You need to replace 19 caps in the power supply 4) 3300uf/35v, 8) 2200uf/25v, 6) 1000uf/10v, 1) 1000uf/16v and you can go a little higher in the voltage of each cap for greater reliability.
It's best to have an ESR meter also and test the remaining caps as well.
