That is a problem with the high/low transmission. The screws that hold the winder post have slipped and the post pushed in to gearbox. The assembly needs to be taken out of the machine and rebuilt. A viking repair person who has been at it for a while might be able to repair this. You may need to look around as this is a repair that is not needed on machines made after the 70's and a lot of current repair people would not know how to do this.

SOURCE: Bobbin Winder won't release

i have a husqvarna rose, i has the same problem when i started using my machine. i was suggested to not wind the bobbin so fast. the reason it gets stuck is because the thread is so tight on the bobbin it actually makes the bobbin a tiny bit smaller, making it hard to get off again. if you dont wind it so fast, it doesn't get so tight.

SOURCE: Designer I software compatibility

You need the Husqvarna Viking software to turn those file extensions into the SHV format. It's about $400 at your dealer. Their web site does a nice job of showing its features. You get over 100 fonts and alot of designs too. You would open your current designs on a screen and then re-write them to the floppy or stick depending on your model of D1. It then sends the stitch information with the picture of the design to the floppy so your D1 can display the image. (The SHV format)
The VIP and HUS format don't carry the image file for your machine so it say's, "file not found", when you try to open them in your D1.

If you're sure you're using the correct needles, you should take it to a service tech to align it properly.

SOURCE: Husqvarna Viking Designer I breaking needles

Dls8864's suggestion was a very good suggestion - make sure the metal stitch plate is pushed all the way to the back. Also make sure that the thread is feeding freely - if it is catching on something it can cause the needle to be pulled aside and make it break. Does the design fit properly inside the hoop you are using? If the foot and/or needle strike against the side of the hoop, that will cause a breakage. Is the bobbin thread okay - not making a bird's nest underneath?

SOURCE: Viking Husqvarna Model 6020 stitch selector will not turn.

look at the cam gear. This is the unit that the cam connects to. It could have a crack or be split completely. If there is a crack the cam stack will have to be replaced. The parts are hard to get and a good technician is needed.

How do I adjust the bobin tension on my Viking Husqvarna model 6440?

Tension of lower thread In most special sewing cases it is sufficient to adjust only the upper thread tension. Rarely do you need to adjust the lower thread tension. If it is necessary to adjust the tension of the lower thread, take out the small screwdriver from the accessory box. Fit it in the larger screw on the thread tension spring and turn it not more than 1/10th of a turn to the left if the thread tension is too tight, to the right if it is too loose.

Winding a bobin

That's how that machine works. You don't loosen the hand wheel or anything, Simply put the bobbin on the winder and go.

My viking 6570 will not engage when I press the foot peddle. It engages if I manually move the gear knob. It was also stuck in reverse for a while. Any ideas?

I would start with disassembly of the machine, cleaning and regreasing of the main bearings, and lubrication of other rotating and sliding parts. Initial friction at start up is greater than when the machine is running which might explain why once you help it get started it then runs.
