Question about Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer
There is no jam, toner is full - yet the damned "out of paper" light keeps going on. Of course, I need it for this weekend....piece of shit printer.
I've had the printer over 3 years and never a problem. Today the red paper light started blinking. In my case, it was a document I was printing from a health care foundation site. I turned off printer, unplugged for 30 secs, turned back on, and red light was gone. I printed several other documents fine. Went back to the foundation document, and bingo, red light came on. No way to clear it except unplug for awhile, and find some place else to print the other document. Really weird.

Had the same problem for like 6 weeks of trying at random intervals to fix it.....
in my case, this was fixed by removing the toner cartridge....
a business card was found jammed behind it...
it worked fine after that.

The clue to the solution for me was a comment by someone about using a different paper. As I thought back, I realized my problem started after I printed a letter on better bond paper. After taking everything apart and trying all the other suggested problems, I simply ran a piece of plain printer paper through the manual feed, which apparently reset the paper size. All is now well.

I had the same problem. No jammed paper etc but while I was checking for one I noticed that the paper draw was not flush with the back of the printer and I was able to push the draw out from the back of the printer (don't think you should be able to do that!) Anyway, pushed it back into position, small click (into place???) and the paper draw could not be pushed forward again. Gave it a go and now the light is off at last and the printer is printing again.

It might seem like you've fixed the jam by pulling the stuck paper out the top of the printer. In my case, there was actually another piece of paper jammed in the interior part of the printer. This can be accessed by folding down the part at the back of the printer. If there is a second piece, slowly pull it out and after that the light should go out.

You may have a subtle electronic flaw with the printer which requires a trained eye to solve. Call in an expert or visit an electronics dept.
