SOURCE: cant play a dvd on laptop hp pavilion dv4000
check ur software that plays ur disks e.g.media player when first installed needs dvd media to be enabled.sounds to me that software is not enabled or codecs are not installed.if it plays cd's ok there is nothing wrong with ur drive whatsoever its a software issue.theres dvd player software at the hp site free to download includes all codecs and plays most media called windvd.
SOURCE: How to adjust the brightness on a HP Pavilion dv4000 laptop scree
Its usually the Fn key (bottom left) and a function key on the top line like F1 to F12 the brightness is the picture of the sun. I couldnt find any specific information on your model but most HP's are the same.

*Actually*, with regards to the screen issue, software CANNOT cause a failure when the display assembly is physically moved....The two possibilities are the LCD harness (video cable) part# 432962-001 OR the actual LCD itself (part# LP171WP4 (TL)(03) for most models). My money's on the cable, not a stupid driver...

Hello, my name is Israel and I will try to help you. You may be lucky and won't need them. HP has been kind enough to put them in the harddrive. First you will need to be sure you have saved any files that you want. If you need to you may have to try to start it in safe mode. Using F8 at start up will get you into safe mode. If your computer cannot start in safe mode and you just want to redo the whole thing, then at start up press F11. This will get to the restore program and follow the directions. Good Luck.
