I have had this happen about 3 times. The first time was when i figured out how to fix it. The 2nd and 3rd were temporary.(Just needed to be turned off for a moment) You need to shut the console off for atleast 15 minutes 10 at the lowest with everthing unplugged. I mean the hard drive, memory unit, and all cables, and adapters. Then after 10-15 minutes plug everything in and DON'T PRESS the BUTTONS ON THE XBOX OR THE CONTROLLERS. Press the button to open the tray and take out the game or dvd and put in a different one. If this doesn't work do it all over again and then put in a different game or dvd not the previous ones and turn on the console the same but then a soon as you get the disc in and closed in shut it off then open the tray and wait till you are at the main menu go into any program so you can't see it is reading and close the tray. If that doesn't work contact the xbox support line. Really hope this works for you.

This is more than likely your laser that is dead and its possibly a samsung or hitatchi drive, be careful when
buying a new laser because there is a lot of dodgy ones around at the minute which can damage your machine or
at the very least will be inferior and not last long.
its very possible it could also be your logic board which is a controller that controlls your dvd drive and laser etc. if this is faulty (and im betting its a samsung) then you might have to replace. you can pick these up for swap with the one on your drive for around £10 and can be effective but i would also checj the drive belt and make sure that is tight and working ok and tha laser too.
if your 360 reads dvd's but not games it may be repairable but if it wont read anything then your better off replacing the laser. strip down the console and strip the dvd drive, take out the laser and look underneath it, it will have a code such as HD57 or something else, note that down. Visit ebay and search for the laser with the same code, buy it, fit it in and make sure you de-solder the static blob of solder before using it (search the net about this or ask the seller) and then try your machine again :)

Testimonial: "thanks i'll try it out"
Your DVD drive's laser is malfunctioning.
You have a few options:
1) Decrease the resistance on the laser to increase power, and it may be able to read the discs again. A guide for that can be found here.
2) If that doesn't work, or you do not wish to do that, you can replace the laser head all together. Replacements can be found on eBay. You can follow this guide to replace the laser head.
3) You can replace the DVD drive completely, but it will require taking the original drive's firmware and putting it on the replacement one. The guide for that can be found here.
