Question about HP OmniBook XE3 Notebook

Power jack connection broken on HP Omnibook xe3

My Omnibook power jack connection to the motherboard seems to be broken. At first it would only work if I pushed down on it by resting a book on the plug. I have purchased an external battery charging pack as I had a spare battery but I could really do with continuous AC power. Can this be fixed? Is there a more permanent repair solution?

    My XE3 has what looks like the hole for the docking connection but it has a plastic cover. Does that mean that the connection is beneath or has it not got one do you think?

I bought a docking station (port replicator) off ebay, and it has worked great. I had a look at the motherboard, and the docking station uses a different connection for power than the damaged AC port. So in summary, yes a docking port should solve your problem.

If you can get a docking station for it you may be able to solve it that way.

    yes the dock connector is under that plastic bit / part so yes you do have one - if you lift the plastic part up you should find that there are some copper connectors or some array of connectors.

    Contact HP or somewhere that sells laptops and they should be able to get you one for your exact make and model of laptop

    obviously price will be a factor so maybe have a hunt around

When you connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED light up? If not then - The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's power socket could be faulty. Check power adapter's DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

I have Acer Laptop with a JV50PU motherboard which has a faulty DC input socket connection. The laptop works OK on Charged battery but not on DC input. Is it possible to get a schematic of the motherb


If the DC Power Jack is soldered onto the motherboard then take the time to unsolder it and remove it. Then buy another DC Power Jack which costs less than $8.00 and solder it into it's place. Normally when it is soldered onto the motherboard there is no cable involved. That's all there is to it if it's soldered onto the motherboard.

If it sits on a slot in the motherboard and has a cable harness attached to it then you can purchase that too for less than $15.00. All you do then is follow where the other end of the cable harness plugs into the motherboard and unplug it. Then place the new dc jack in the slot where the old one sat and plug the other end of the cable harness into the motherboard.

How to remove the bottom of a laptop to tighten the power supply outlet


You will probably have to strip it right down to get the motherboard out.
The socket might need resoldering. if you are not technically minded you would be better off taking it to a repair shop. You can do more damage than good if you are not careful. Youtube have a lot of videos about disassembling laptops / pc's if you want to do it yourself.

Broken central pin on power jack of Asus Eee PC 1015ped


I realize I'm providing a solution to an older problem, and may never hear back from the original poster.
I am providing a solution because in the event it may help someone else.

The center pin you state is part of the DC Power Jack. The jack on the laptop, that the plug from the AC adapter (Charger) plugs into.

The center pin is the Positive connection.
The outer metal pieces, on the inside of the cylindrical shape surrounding the center pin, make up the Negative connection.

Click on the two views shown of the jack to enlarge.
The view on the left, shows how the jack normally sits on the motherboard. Front faces you, and in upright position.

The view on the right shows the jack upside down, and the back faces you.
Note the 4 metal tangs which protrude up. Each has a squarish hole in it.

These tangs go through the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard. These tangs are Negative connections.
They connect to the metal pieces inside the cylindrical shape.

Looking at the Back of the jack, (Right view), you see a metal tang coming out of the center.
This tang is the Positive connection. It attaches straight to the Center Pin.

To replace the DC Power Jack, the Eee needs to be completely disassembled down to the motherboard in your hands.

(Observe Anti-Static Precautions. Use an ESD wrist strap. Average cost is around $3 to $6. Connect the alligator clip to a good ground source.
{ I connect to an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of an open, empty desktop computer case )

The broken DC Power Jack is c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y removed from the motherboard, and after the area is prepped, the new DC Power Jack is soldered into place.

Hello.

The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.

The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

There is a bad connection between the power cord and the port into which it fits. this bad connect has lasted for weeks. i've been able to jiggle the cord and situate it so their is a connection. but, now...


The port on the laptop where the AC adapter, (Charger to some), plugs into is the DC Power Jack.
(Or DC-in )

As you probably know computers use DC voltage.
Your laptop battery, and a flashlight battery are examples of stored DC electricity.

Looking at all three views, the middle pin of the jack is for the Positive connection. Down inside the round opening on the side, is a strip of metal. One on each side. These are for the Negative connection.

Looking at the jack in all three views, you will note a flat pin, or Prong, that comes up in the middle, and at the back of the jack.
You will note that it is riveted to the center pin, or Positive connection.

The two flat pins, (Or Prongs), immediately on either side of the middle flat pin, are for the Negative connection. They connect to the strips of metal inside the round jack opening.

In relation to how the jack sits inside the laptop, the jack is upside down. The flat pins go down through the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard on the other side.

1.The body of the DC Power Jack is made of a type of Phenolic plastic. Hard, and has great insulating qualities.

It is also easily broken.
If you can move the center pin around, this is what has happened. (Battery REMOVED!)

Solution is to replace the DC Power Jack.

2.Where the flat pins go through the motherboard, and are soldered, is called a Solder Joint. The area where the flat pin meets the motherboard, and solder is applied.

One, or more solder joints can crack.
This gives you an intermittent connection, such as you have described.

Solution is to re-solder the solder joint/s.

3.There are also laptops that have a bad motherboard design.
The DC Power Jack is placed on an area of the motherboard, that is weak.

If you think of a 1 foot square sheet of plastic, as being the main body of the motherboard, and attach a 2 inch strip to the main body, this is the area shape that I'm referring to.

The 2 inch strip can crack, where it meets the main body.
Motherboards have Circuit Traces. Think of them as Very, Flat, Thin, copper wires.
Circuit traces go across the main body of the motherboard, and lead to the 2 inch strip. If this 2 inch strip cracks away from the main body of the motherboard, the circuit traces break.

If you move the AC adapter plug while in the DC Power Jack, you may be able to make the broken circuit traces touch each other, making a connection.
Eventually this fails to work.

Solution is to replace the motherboard. With this type of bad design the problem will reoccur.

If you save it to your computer, you won't have to download it again. You can also burn it off to CD disk, and free up space on your harddrive.

I haven't worked on the Acer Aspire 4520 series yet.
The DC-in jack, (DC Power Jack) is on the Right side at the rear. (Page 17)

Looking at the Board Layout, Top View, on Page 12, you can see the DC Power Jack.

Come down below the 1 with the red small rectangle. Look straight to the left of the Half Moon hole, with the two top corners cut off. The DC Power Jackis on near the edge of the motherboard. (Board)

On Page 13 you're looking at the Bottom view of the motherboard. (Board)
The little silvery dots are solder joints.

Your motherboard design does not follow Item 3,
I listed above.
You have a broken DC Power Jack, or cracked solder joints.

MY GATEWAY LAPTOP NO LONGER RECEIVES POWER.


Motherboard or harddrive? I'm betting it's more towards the motherboard. The DC Power Jack to be more specific. This is the port where the AC adapter, (Charger), plug is plugged into.

The DC Power Jack is not much bigger, than the plug for the AC adapter that plugs into it. There are small pin leads that are on the bottom of this jack, and they go through the motherboard, and are soldered to the motherboard.

Accidental bumping of the AC adapter plug, while plugged into the DC Power Jack, can damage the jack. It can break the connections for the adapter plug, and/or can crack the solder joints for those small pin leads.

[Laptops use DC electricity. A flashlight battery, and a laptop battery, are examples of stored DC electricity. DC electricity has two poles. Positive and Negative. The DC Power Jack has two connections. Positive and Negative. {Even if the DC Power Jack has multiple holes in it]

There is also another known problem associated with DC Power Jacks. It may stem from a bad motherboard design.

More to the point, the area where the DC Power Jack mounts on the motherboard. In this design, the DC Power Jack motherboard area, is almost a separate part of the motherboard. It's shaped like a Peninsula. (Think of an island, with one side connected to the mainland)

This peninsula shape, has the tendency to crack away from the main body of the motherboard. Circuit traces are broken.

When the AC adapter plug is setting in a certain position, it presses the two broken halves of the circuit traces together, for a momentary contact. As the AC adapter plug is moved from this position, the circuit trace halves are moved apart, and there is no contact.

(No distribution of electricity from one circuit trace half, to the other circuit trace half. Think of a circuit trace as a very, thin, flat copper wire. When a circuit trace is broken, there is essentially a wire that is broken into two parts)

Solution?
See if the DC Power Jack can be repaired, (Solder joint connections re-soldered), or replaced.
If the DC Power Jack motherboard area is the aforementioned peninsula shape, it may require replacement of the motherboard.

There are very FEW, computer repair shops that have the technical expertise to replace a DC Power Jack. Easy fix is to simply replace the motherboard. (More $$$$$ too)

However, some laptops DO require replacement of the motherboard for this repair.
Bad motherboard design, for the DC Power Jack area on the motherboard.

Re-solder DC Power Jack solder joints? (IF, this is the problem) Average is $50 to $75 (US)
Replace DC Power Jack? Average is $125 to $150. (US)
Replace motherboard? Depends on the Gateway model. Could be $225 to $400 (US)

[Yes, most of the time the cost warrants just replacing the laptop itself, as the cost of replacing, is close to the repair cost)

Just to SHOW you ab average DC Power Jack, and the repair involved of replacing. (Doesn't show you, that the entire laptop needs to be disassembled, down to the bare motherboard in hand)

This is NOT a recommendation to replace the DC Power Jack yourself! It is just for knowledge of what is partially involved. (You can accidentally burn the motherboard when desoldering, or soldering, rendering the motherboard useless)

Power jack connection broken on HP Omnibook xe3


The jack in itself is quite robust, it is the soldering to the board that sometimes lack substance, also rough usage in the way of forcing the plug in and pulling it out roughly contributes to the demise of the soldering. If the jack is still intact take it to a repair shop and if the pads haven't broken away from the printed cirsuit board have them reflow and maybe add a bit of extra solder to the joints.

Cord will not stay in allowing battert to charge


The connection on the motherboard is bad. This is fairly common with laptops. You can possibly get it fixed at a local mom & pop PC repair shop. Good luck.
