Hello, I highly suggest reinstalling Windows XP. Backup all of your files onto an External Harddrive. Then use a windows XP CD and reinstall windows XP. Its very simple. I suggest googling the instructions, and printing them. System restore is a very limited feature in windows. I don't suggest it anyways, it has a very low success rate. Besides, system restore does not fix a computer after a virus. It will simply restore a few settings, such as printers, and this and that.

Disable system restore - fix what the problem is and delete the old system restore points and then re enable the system restore and make a restore point again.

If you need more help post back and explain what the problem is or why you are trying to restore it and I will help further.

Factory restore

Dell Dimension computers have a built-in PC restore system that allows you to quickly restore the PC to its original factory settings.
The PC restore is located in a hidden partition of the PC's hard drive and contains a copy of the computer's original factory installed software.
There are two different ways to restore the Dimension's settings depending on which operating system your computer is running.

Windows XP

Disconnect all peripheral equipment that is attached to your computer such as printer, scanner, external hard drive and memory sticks.
Restart the computer.
After the Dell screen appears on the monitor, hold down the "Ctrl" key and press the "F11" key.
If the Windows XP screen appears before you can finish this step, wait for the computer to finish rebooting and restart the computer again.

Highlight "Restore" in the Dell PC Restore window by using the tab button.
Hit "Enter."

Highlight "Confirm" in the restore warning box by using the tab button.
Hit "Enter."
This will start the system restore process.
Do not attempt to turn off the computer during this process or vital system files may be damages and you will not be able to restart your computer.

Click "Finish" in the box that notifies you that the restoration has been successful.

Hit "Enter" to restart the computer.
The computer has been restored to the original factory settings.

Windows Vista

Disconnect all peripheral equipment that is attached to your computer such as printer, scanner, external hard drive and memory sticks.

Restart the computer.
After the Dell screen appears on the monitor, press the "F8" key.
If the Windows Vista screen appears before you can finish this step, wait for the computer to finish rebooting and restart the computer again.

Highlight "Repair Your Computer" by using the down arrow key in the Advanced Boot window.
Hit the "Enter" key.

Click "Next" after selecting a language. Log into the computer as an administrator.
"OK." Choose "Dell Factory Restore."
Click "Next."

Check "Yes" next to the reformat the hard drive and restore factory settings option.
Click "Next" to start the restoration process.
Do not attempt to turn off the computer during this process or vital system files may be damages and you will not be able to restart your computer.

Click "Finish" in the box that notifies you that the restoration has been successful.
The computer will automatically restart itself to its original factory settings.

Factory system restore

The System Restore tool built into Microsoft Windows allows you to dial the operating system back to an earlier time without deleting any of your files.
The Dell OptiPlex 755 has a few features that can affect a restoration to your system and get you running again if your system is not behaving as it should.
Use the Dell PC Restore tool is a last resort option, as the operation wipes all the data on your computer and returns it to its original condition.

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and "System Restore."
Choose "Restore my computer to an earlier time," then click the most recent date on the calendar in bold print. Select a restore point from the list, then click "Next."

Accept the warning and click "Next." The restore process restarts your computer; check to see that the problem is solved after the computer restarts.
If not, you can restore back further.
Follow the steps again, going to the next most recent restore date, until the problem is resolved.

PC Restore

Power off the computer. Turn on the computer, and while it's booting, hold down "Ctrl" and press "F11" in Windows XP or "F8" in Windows Vista or later.

Click "Restore" then "Confirm" in Windows XP.
In Windows Vista and later, click "Repair your Computer," then "Next." Log in with a username and password.
Click "Dell Factory Image Restore," then "Next."
Confirm that you want to reformat the hard drive, then click "Next."

Click "Finish" when the button appears.
Your computer reboots, with the operating system nowrestored to the same state it was in when the computer was new.

Start up and desktop icons missing

Hi,

This could happen due to various reasons like :
1. Any recent update done.
2) Virus infected
3) Windows missing/corrupted files.

There are several steps to resolve the issue.

Try one after another and check if that fixes the issue.

Step 1

Try this Fix
Click on the Download link and install the Fix No. 195 ( Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar )
Download Link

Step 2

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring Task Manager.
Click on New Task and type appwiz.cpl and click OK
This will re-run add/remove programs.
Remove/Uninstall all new program you installed before having this problem, Also remove the Windows XP Hotfix
Restart your PC.
The access to the taskbar , icons will all come back and Install a new Antivirus.

Step 3
If None of the above steps work, try a System Restore to previous date

Click START - All Programs - ACCSESSORIES - System Tool - System Restore
Choose the date before the system started giving trouble. ( The Date will be in bold ( highlighted ) which indicates the system can be restored to that date with all the settings on that date )

*Note : Doing system restore will uninstall any software/program you have installed from the date you choose the system restore till current date, However it will not delete any files created )

Hope this is helpful.

Dell Optiplex GX150 Factory Settings Restore Partition...

This is from the Dell support site. You were correct in pressing ctrl+f11 but perhaps you did not press at the correct time. If in following these first two steps you do not get the recovery console, it may not have been installed on your computer.

1 Turn on the computer.
2 When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
3 In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.
4 When a warning message appears stating that all data will be lost, click Confirm, or press <Tab> to highlight Confirm and then press <Enter>.

The Progress window will appear. Once the restore process starts, Dell PC Restore by Symantec usually takes about 8 to 10 minutes to finish.

When the restore process is complete, the following message will appear:
The system recovery process was successful.
5 Click Finish or press <Tab> to highlight Finish and then press <Enter> to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.
