No, this is a fax/data modem. It can be used for internet access and for fax services. You need a voice modem for voicemail services

Can send faxes but not receiving them and yes there is paper in fax

Make sure the correct fax number is assigned on the printer. If you have an answering machine connected to the same line as your fax, configure it so that the answering machine picks up first then the fax. For more information, please refer to this article: Change Number of Rings on Inkjet AIO to Alleviate Issues with Answering Machines.
If you have a voicemail feature associated with the fax line, please disable the voicemail. Voicemail feature and the fax will not work together in the same line.

Can you send a fax using an hp deskjet f2430 printer, scan, copier?

Yes you can, but not without the aid of your computer. You will need a dial-up modem installed with a phone line connected, and some fax software. Then the actual fax sending and receiving is done by the computer, while the all-in-one just serves to scan material for sending and as a printer for receiving. But the printer can't be used as a fax machine all by itself.

Where to plug in the phone line for the fax

You don't plug a phone line into this printer. It's not a fax machine itself. According to the user's guide (which you can download here), "To send a fax using this printer, you need to have the printer attached to a computer that is equipped with a modem and has Microsoft Fax installed."

What this means is that the printer is just serving as the input (scanner) and output (printer) parts of a stand-alone scanner, but you need your computer to connect to the phone line. Without the computer modem and Microsoft Fax software, your printer is, well, just a printer, with scanning capability.

Sorry! Thanks for using Fixya.

I have a new phone carrier(Vonage) and a new DSL modem from at&t. Prior to obtaining either, my fax machine worked fine. Now, I can't send or receive faxes..(Why)

This is a common issue with all fax machines that use a voip service. Basically, the reception and transmission features of the fax machine are not compatible with voip service. There is a modification that you can perform that usually allows you to avoid this problem, you must lower all transmission and reception speeds of the fax modem; this allows the data to be properly carried over the line without much loss or degradation.

I cannot receive faxes. I have a voicemail set up on my phone that is in use. I would like to use the 1050 as a phone and a fax machine only. I will settle if I could only use it as a fax machine. I have...

If you have a voicemail set on the same line then you may only be able to use either the fax or the voice mail if you want to the fax then change the rings to answer on the fax to 2 (setup button->basic fax settings->rings to answer->press ok on 2) keep the mode to auto mode. However if you want to use both the voicemail and the fax on the same line you might have to get a DRP (Distinctive Ring Pattern) from you telephone company.

Fax answers on phone calls.

Hello There. Most household all in one units cannot operate on the ring characteristcs that you are describing.

They simply operate on the number of rings before automatic pickup to the fax machine. Therefore, you will need to just change the number of rings before the fax machine picks up. In this case however, you will not be able to use voicemail, since one or the other will will pickup.

Page 63 and 64 (in PDF) or page 62 and 63 (hardcopy manual) explain the process.

Ignore the information about setting higher then voicemail. That information is typically only valid if you have the old voicemail devices in your home. Most people now adays get a voicemail service added to your telephone service, in which case you cannot control the voicemail as easily.

So again, in other words you will be sacrificing your voicemail for your fax machine. Only other way around it is to get a dedicated fax line to seperate the two numbers.

Phone won't go into voicemail, only fax mode

Your cable company is correct. Your printer is set to the phone/fax mode which allows the machine to be act as a phone or fax. It can tell the difference between an incoming voice call and an incoming fax. You should set your printer to Fax Only. Here's how:

  1. Push the menu button
  2. Press 0 (zero)
  3. Press 1 (one)
  4. The display should now show fax only.
  5. Press Ok.
To review what we did:
We set your printer to only recognize faxes when they are sent. Voice calls will now go through to your voice mail, if you do not answer.

I can;t received faxes on my computer

Are you using DSL connection or Dial-up?
What OS are you using?

The fax line and voice line are using the same frequency so you should be able to fax directly from your pc fax modem when using Dial up connection but in DSL the data and voice are using different frequency. So in normal situations you wont be able to fax using DSL modem unless you use a separate fax machine.

However, if specified during the set-up of the DSL line, the signal can be separated so that some of the bandwidth is used to transmit an analog signal (for voice and fax) while the remaining bandwidth is used to transmit digital data. This allows for the use of the telephone or fax, and computer on the same line and at the same time. When inquiring about DSL with the service provider, specify the desire to use the phone line for voice or fax calls while connected through the computer to the Internet.

Reference the following setup options for using a DSL line with HP all-in-one or fax products.

How do I fax?

Sending a fax from your computer requires a fax modem and that your operating system be configured to allow you to send and receive faxes.

to send from fax software
step 1 Prepare the document that you want to fax. Step2 Prepare a fax cover sheet, if desired. Step3 Open your fax software - such as Microsoft Fax or Microsoft Exchange. Step4 Look for an icon or menu command that allows you to send a fax - such as Send New and Send Fax. Click on that item. Step5 Follow instructions for entering the fax number of the recipient and any other requested information. Be sure to include area codes and long-distance information if needed. Step6 Indicate whether you wish to send a cover sheet. Step7 When asked to attach the file, follow instructions to attach the file that you want to fax. Step8 When ready, click Send. The fax will begin to compile the information and, when ready, will dial the remote fax machine. Step9 When the connection is made, the fax will be sent. To Fax From Your Word Processing Program Step1 Some software products, such as Microsoft Word, allow you to fax a document without opening your fax software. Step2 Open the document that you want to fax. Step3 From the File menu, select Print. The Print window opens. Step4 Instead of printing to your default printer, look for an option that allows you to Print to Fax. Select this option and click Print. Step5 You will be asked to provide the recipient's fax number and other assorted information as with a fax program. Step6 The fax message compiles, the modem dials. If the connection is made with the other modem, the fax will be sent.

Setting the voicmail

Voicemail or telephone answering device (TAD). There is a BIG difference. Voicemail is product of your telephone service provider. If you have voicemail, most providers have a solution to this that you must arrange through them. If you have an answering machine, you can set your Brother to TAD mode. In TAD mode, if your answering machine picks up, (you must set your answering machine to answer in less rings than your fax), your fax will "eavesdrop" to listen for the fax tones from the sending machine. If it hears these tones, it will disconnect your answering machine and accept the incoming fax. If it does not hear the tones, it allows the answering machine to record the incoming message. If you are home. If you answer the call and hear a tone every 2.5 to 3 seconds, that signals an incoming fax. Simply touch *51 on the keypad of the phone you picked up on. You will hear some shrill tones. That is your fax machine attempting to receive the incoming fax. Hang up the phone you are on and it will receive the fax. In any case, make sure that the receive mode is NOT set to AUTO. Set the receive mode to TAD or MANUAL. If these instructions were not clear enough, let me know and I will send you DETAILED instructions. You can find the manual here: http://www.brother-usa.com/Data/Documentation/Fax/User/UM_FAX2820_FAX2920_MFC7220_MFC7225N.pdf If you need additional assistance, please let me know before you rate this solution.
