Question about Tascam 2488 Portastudio Multitrack Recorder System

Open Question

Tascam 2488 system error code 3 Hi. I'm having a problem with my new Tascam 2488 neo. I've tried a few times to record my band while using the unit as the mixer. I have the main sliders routed to the house speakers, and the effects 1 routed to monitor speakers. The first time, about an hour into the recording, the unit partially stopped responding AND it stopped sending sound through the outputs to the amplifier powering the speakers. The tracks were still armed for recording and lit steadily as if it were still recording, however, the clock was not moving (as if were stopped). If i tried accessing the menu, it would say "Cannot do this while not stopped..." I ended up having to do a cold shut down and loose my data. This has happened a second time (possibly error code 3). On both occasions, I wasn't even touching the unit when the problem occured (i'm also the keyboardist) as I was playing at the time. Any ideas?

SOURCE: Tascam 2488 Recorder

The 2488 has three effects types: “Mic” effects (compression, exciter, de-esser) you use while recording or insert into a channel; multieffects (distortion, amp model, modulation effects, delay, wah, etc.); and an internal send effect (reverb, delay, chorus, pitch shift, flanger, phaser, and gated reverb).

To add effects to an already recorded track you can assign the effect using the internal send loop for the channel and then bounce the track to print a copy of the track with the effect applied.

SOURCE: vocal effects on Tascam 2488 MK 2 portable studio

Hi again,

The easiest way to record using an external Lexicon effects unit (without an external mixer) is to connect your mic onto one of the 2488's inputs and assign that input to a channel strip (track). You should have the 2488 sends (output) going to the Lexicon's inputs. Then connect the Lexicon outputs back into another set of inputs on your 2488 and assign those inputs to two empty channel strips (tracks).

Then you will have to take that channel that has your mic input assigned to it and press send and set the levels there to send the signal out the sends (to the Lexicon).
Now you have a channel strip assigned to the mic input which contains your dry signal, and you have the two inputs returning from the Lexicon which contains your wet or effected signal.
You then have some options. You can control the amount of effected signal you hear while recording by adjusting the faders of the two wet tracks and you can either record the dry signal or the wet signal (or both) onto separate tracks.

Typically when recording the singer will want to hear an effect (say reverb) on his voice, but the engineer wants to record only the dry track at recording time (because effects can always be added later, but they can't be taken out). To accomplish this you would use the setup above, but only arm the mic input track for recording. In this way the singer hears the reverb, but only the dry vocals get recorded and the engineer can add reverb to that track again later as desired (and mix it back with the dry vocal etc).

On the other hand if you want to record only the effected signal you would simply arm the two channels to which the inputs coming back from your Lexicon are assigned for recording. This will get you a recording of the effected signal only.
Hope this helps you do what you are trying to do.

Cheers.

SOURCE: TRANSFERING OLD TRACKS TO THE NEW TASCAM 2488-NEO

You'll need your PC as the intermediary. You'll have to do a USB export of the tracks you want from the DP01 to your PC and then connect the 2488's USB to the PC and do a USB import of those tracks into new tracks on the 2488.

Page 40 of the DP01FX manual will explain using the USB connection and page 43 details the steps for performing a USB export.

In the 2488 NEO manual refer to pages 80 and 81 for using the USB connection and importing the tracks.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Tascam 2488 system error code 1

I had
System error code:01
on my Tascam 2488 neo
Turns out it was a hard drive error. I tried everything. I used the "Quick Routing/Shift/Send/ShutDown" trick where you press all four buttons at once and keep them pressed down throughout while you power on the unit util you see a message saying "System Reset Complete. Now Power Down". Numerous times it came on and said stuff like "creating partition," "creating song" and "now working" but it always ended with "System Error Code:01". That trick is upposed to reset system par?meters to default and erase everything from the hard drive and reset the hard drive. I even removed the hard drive, hooked it up to my Windows 10 PC and used Windows utils to reate and/or delete partitions and both "quick" and regular format. I also tried all the hard drive utils from the manufacturers like a formatting and a scrubbing util etc.,.nothing ?orked until I downloaded, inst?lled ?nd used a low level format utility called "Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool," its installation file is called "HDDLLFsetup.4.40.exe" which is available from mul?iple internet sites, just search for it. Here is how to repair your Tascam hard drive or prepare any new hard drive for installtion or upgrade that is giving endless problems and system error codes on the Tascam:
1. Open your recorder and remove the hard drive from the Tascam. If you're unsure about doing this there is a YouTube video av?iable about how to replace your Tascam 2488 hard drive.
2. Connect that drive by any means available to your laptop or PC. I used a USB to SATA ad?pter and connected it to my laptop, I also successfully did this using my desktop PC.
3. Run the "HDDLLFsetup.4.40.exe" application and install it.
4. Now use the newly installed "Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool" utility.
5. Select your hard drive then the low level format tab and don't sele?t the "quick" option, make sure it does a full low level format. It'll be slow and t?ke some time. Any hard dive prepared like this will ?ork in the Tasc?m except incompatible or damaged hard drives.
6. Reinstall hard drive into Tascam and simply power on the Tasc?m. Do not use any special boot up tricks with any key combinations, just turn it on.
7. Select "yes" when asked if you want to form?t the drive. W?it a few seconds until it completes cre?ting and working. It should boot up to normal use mode and be ready for recording within 3 minutes. If yours takes longer your hard drive may be damaged and need replacing. I tried other hard drive utilities from Hitachi, Seagate, S?msung and Western Digital but none worked. O?ly the "HDDLLFsetup.4.40.exe" was able to fix the problem.

Hi folks :-) I'm affraid that we have started up wrong, but I hope we can fix it ! Problem: A band, we've made a que-track (everybody's playing and singing at the same time) now we've...

Real musicians do change tempo throughout a song, so its not necessarily a bad thing. As long as you like the sound it doesn't matter if you don't stick rigidly to a fixed tempo. Unfortunately you won't be able to fix the tempo after the initial recording so you'll have to live with it or re-record. If you need a click track to record along to, try recording yourself hitting drum stick together along to the already recorded track. As a human you can track small tempo changes much easier than a computer. If you need to create a count in, just copy and paste a section of this click track to the start of the track. I hope this makes sense!

I want to sing over disk soundtrack.I have tascam neo. Please tell me how to do that,Thank you

The best way to accomplish this would involve ripping the sountrack from disk first using your PC to create a wav file and then importing the resulting stereo wav file into a pair of tracks on the 2488 NEO.

The process for ripping would depend on whatever software you use to rip from the CD (lots of free ones available out there) and the process to import a stereo wave into the 2488 NEO would be detailed in your 2488 manual on pages 81 and 81.

Hope this helps.
