Hi, i'd like to replace the build-in fan in my buffalo terastation ts-1.0tgl/r5 for a more silent one. its a 80*80*25mm fan with a three-pin connector. from what i heard, it has to be adjustable. can i just buy a silent fan with a three-pin connector or do i have to make sure that it has certain properties?

If you are talking about the fan it's self it could be one of three things. Fan belt may be worn and needs replacing or if its new the belt may need to be tensioned again as new belts do stretch a bit. But while you are there check the rubber of the belt for cracking or perished area Could be a noisy bearing that needs cleaning or replacing which will make a whistle type sound. Last is that the actual fan may be out of shape or the fan housing which could have a build up of dirt dust that could give off a odd sound. Hope this is of some help
No need to enter Username and password in vista everytime you boot the computer
you can blame the security setting in windows vista -these decide the request /response authentication protocol used for the network login .The default setting for win vista NTLMv2 (NT lan manager version 2) but the terastation still uses an earlier version of it . The setting can be changed as follows :click tge start button ,enter "secpol.msc " in the search field and double click the progrma found .confirm the start of the console with "continue' .Finally ,double- click and open "security settings".then expand the "local policies" "security option" folder .In the following list select "Network security :lan manager authentication level".A dialog box open on double clicking it .At this point, switch to the "local security setting" tabthe default set option "send NTLMv2 respone only " to "send LM & NTLM -use NTLMv2 session security.if negotiated " .save the changes with "ok" and teraStation will start working again
You have antivirus installed on this NAS system? You will want to look up the product manual for that product and see if it allows antivirus programs to be installed. Some NAS stations come with built in anti virus. You could even contact their support to get a list of "SUPPORTED" anti virus software. At which point, you will have to telnet or console into the data storage system and install the software. You could probably install the files through a CIFS connection but it would be best to contact Buffalo support as they can walk you through the proper steps.
How can you loose the password? if your that stoopid then i think you shouldnt own TS,or is it you have bought second hand only to find its password encrypted? either way if you cant read then you shouldnt own a TS instead why not see if you can swap for an external HD ;D
