To turn on a pc power supply without the pc is simple. among all the wires there is only one green wire and there is only one grey wire: just bridge the two and the power supply will stay on. a yellow and black wire is 12volts (yellow is +, black is -). in case you short the outputs it will go off; just disconnect the mains supply for a few seconds and then put it back on.

You need to ground pin 14 momentarily to turn the power supply on. Pin 10 provides +12v, pin 12 provides -12v. Diagram here.

If it does not have those pins it is not a Dell power supply, it is only part of a Dell power supply. Without knowing exactly what part(s) of the power supply you have it is impossible to tell you what to do.

DickCanFixIt, hi, I have a question, one day my dell inspiron 690 did not show any signs of life. I bought a NPS1000 AB-1A power supply, put it in, same thing, I did the pin 14 to ground, power supply turns on, but as soon as I connect the same connector with pin14 in the mother board with the ground shorted, it does not turn on the computer. is that normal, or is that a protection? there are 2 motherboard connectors, with the pin 14 grounded it turns on all the fans, but with thesame connector not connected, when connected to motherboard, all fans go off. pls help

I have an Astec DS 1500-3-001 power supply that I want to use a a stand alone PS. What pins do I need to connect to get +12v DC output with 120 VAC Input.

Mike
I take it that this is a standard power supply out of a PC (switch mode)
These are a common connection point on any brand PC
Use a DC Voltmeter to find the Ground, +5 Volt & +12 volt wires to power your 3.5 inch Hard Drive. The 2.5" Hard Drives (laptop) has only Ground (Black) & +5 Volt.

Connecting speakers to a pc

The 12v dc power supply is for the speakers. There should be a spot for it on them. All modern PCs use power speakers, since the sound cards have no amplifier.

My dash lights and my radio stop workin when i was installing a new radio, how can i fix this?

sounds like you have a problem with the power supply. Check the fuse. if ok, remove the new radio and check the power connection to the radio. if you cut into a wire harnis to find a hot 12v connection, you may have severed the dash 12v supply or knocked it loose . Take it slow and retrace your steps, but first check the fuse panel. You may have shorted out a wire without knowing it when attempting the install. lift the pos. lead on you battery the next time you play with 12v.

TRC520 CB wont power up

Hello, First of all you only have the Power wire Red, and the ground wire Black to connect for 12v DC to power the unit. If you memory power it is usually connected to a constant power source such as the cigarette lighter or continuous 12V dc powersupply off of the battery. These are the only connections that should be connected to provide power. Since the unit will not turn on I suspect that the CB's power supply and regulator have been blown. Another possible choice is that the radio was working and someone removed the antenna cable and the the RF power amplifier malfunctioned taking the power supply and regulator with it. To solve this problem, check the voltages on the wires before connecting them to the radio (these should be the 12 volt power off of the radio circuit, and the 12 volt power off of the continuous 12V connector (or the cigarette lighter). These voltages should read 12V. Connect the CB with it turned off and measure the voltages (should be 12V) Turn the radio on and check the voltages (should be a little less than 12V) If the radio does not come on then the internal power supply of the radio might be defective (In this case I would advise taking the CB to a qualified radio repair shop) I hope this helps Thank you, Shuttle83 http://www.electron-age-technologies-llc.com
