Is the shadow off set from the original image?
if so it could be the cleaning unit for the fuser (heater) may have to be changed. If the cleaner does not clean the fuser rollers a residual image will be passed onto the page.

I am not completely familiar with your model of machine, but if it is a cartridge machine, were the toner and /or drum unit comes in a cartridge rather than a bottle or tube, the manufacturer will usually include a fuser cleaning wick or pad. If these don't get installed with the cartridges then this is a result. Check your operators manual for info on the fuser and fuser cleaning.

The fuser is the two heated rollers that fix the toner to the page. as part of this unit there will be a wick, roller or web, to keep the upper (Teflon) roller clean. If this cleaning system is not in place or beyond its working life, it will not clean rollers properly.

Toner marks

Your Drum Cylinder has a scratch or clot of toner stuck to it. Every time it rotates along the page (usually 4 rotations per A4) it leaves a copy of the defect on the page. If you take the toner cartidge out of the drum unit, you will be able to turn the drum cylinder until you find the fault. Either replace the drum unit or CAREFULLY clean it with alcohol on a cotton ball (meths or iso propoyl will do) in the case of a toner clot. If the fault recurs quickly after cleaning, then you have a damaged drum and it should be replaced.
Best of luck.

Leaves black marks on copies

It could be leaking toner from the recovery area that sis on top of the dum, it removes any toner that was not transfered to the paper. You would have to remove it and empty out the toner.

My HP 4100 printer prints with a black smudge clear down the page. I clean the roller but continues to print bad copies. Should I replace the cartridge?

Problem is either the cartridge or the fuser.
Put paper in the manual feed tray(tray 1)
Print something. When the paper gets 1/2 way into the printer, open the
top cover. Pull out the toner, look down at the paper.
If it has the smudge replace the toner. If no smudge, replace the fuser.

HP4-smudged copies of printed text are appearing lower on the page...Any ideas on the fix

Run a 1/2 test.
Put paper in the manual feed tray(tray 1).
print something. And watch the paper. As the paper gets
about 1/2 way into the printer, open the top cover, remove the toner.
Look down at the paper. If you don't see smudged text, the fuser is probably bad.
If you see the smudging, replace the toner.

Black smudges down left side of page

How do I clean white or black spots on printed documents? Description: First make 10 to 15 copies of a blank, white sheet of paper.
If you still see the spots on printed documents after making multiple copies, clean the drum unit as follows:

  1. Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly, and then remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit.
  2. Position the print sample in front of the drum unit so you will know the exact position on the drum that is causing the poor print.
  3. all-ug-19.gif
  4. Turn the black gear on the drum as you check the surface of the OPC drum.
The OPC drum is photosensitive so do not touch it with your fingers.
  5. all-ug-20.gif
  6. When you find the substance on the drum surface that matches the print sample, gently dab the surface of the OPC drum with a cotton swab that is lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
  7. Note
      • Do not use a scrubbing or wiping motion because this might damage the drum.
        all-ug-21.gif
      • Do not try to clean the surface of the OPC drum with a sharp object, such as a ball-point pen, because this might cause permanent damage to the drum unit.
  8. If the print quality still has not improved you need to install a new drum.

After changing toner on my sharp, SF-2022 copy machine, the copies are coming out with black smudge marks across the paper? how/where should i clean?

This means the machine is over-toning ie using more toner than required caused by either improper toner or different brand of toner. The correct toner is sf 222T1. Replace developer and use the right toner and clean the drum and its blade. You may need to clean fuser rollers for cleaner copies.

SMUDGED COPIES

Easiest to check is make sure the type of paper you are using is setup in the menu. Look at your owners manual pages 147- 149 to guide you through the setup.
http://www.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/lexmarkt522/eng/printall.pdf

If that doesn't do it, your fuser has gone bad. The fuser is the part that superheats the toner/ink so that it attaches to the paper. One clear sign of a serious problem is toner that refuses to adhere to the paper, resulting in smeared text and graphics (and sometimes, toner on your hands and clothes). In this case, the fuser, which makes toner stick to paper, may be broken. On some printers, you can peek at the fuser to see if there is any visible damage. Use your printer manual to help locate the fuser. Some printers have a felt-covered area covering the hot parts so that you can open part of the fuser and peek inside.

PC-65 (Canon copier)

A smudge across the copy can be in many different areas.
Some ideas.
The drum cleaner may be the problem as you indicate.
It may be a piece of paper ripped of dragging across the surface of the paper causing the smudge.
Also the fuser roll coating may be very worn and causing that.
One thing to try that can show you if the defect is on the drum cartridge, is start to run a copy, After the paper feeds and this is timing, shut the machine off when you think the paper should be about half way through the copy cycle, then see if the copy defect is on the unfused page, If it is smeared before it reaches the fuser, it is in the cleaning section, if it is not smudged, then it is most likely the fuser rollers are needing replaced.
First look for a paper fragment in the path, step 2 is to shut the machine down in mid copy and see if the defect is there.
The fuser is the hot area of the machine in the exit area, If you can take a flash light and look in there and see if you observe wear or heavy toner buildup on a roller then obviously thats the problem.

Printed pages look dirty

That black dust that fell out is the toner. When you shake a toner cartridge that shouldn't happen. It looks like you have a faulty toner cartidge and that need to be replaced! Now to make your printer prints cleanly and clearly after you replace the cartridge, you'll need to get someone to service the printer(the faulty toner cartridge more than likely spilled toner on your internal printer parts, cause the smudges). Sevicing would mainly entail, taking down the printer and removing any spilt toner! If you feel you are up to this, be cautious, because toner can be hazardous to your health if you accidentally breathe it in! hope this was helpful! regards babb
