Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Playstation 3 power up.

Same trouble as everybody else, at power on light goes yellow then flashing red. Is this a spot soldering job that i have heard about as on some lap tops, or a replacment power chip?
regards Jim

It appears to be a power supply issue. Try installing a new power supply. If this helps, please rate me.

My playstation 3 console wont turn , when i try to it stops and a blue then yellow light flashes , what can i do to fix this.

source: http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html#PS3_Model_Differences Yellow Light of DeathThe "Yellow Light of Death" or YLOD is the common phrase people use to describe the following sequence when they try to turn on their PS3:

  • Press Power Button
  • Red Light Flashes Three Times
  • Yellow Light Flashes
  • Green Light Flashes
  • Beeps Three Times
  • Red Light Flashes

The sequence above may vary a bit but you do see the flashing yellow light (sometimes shows up as orange) that normally you would not see when operating your PS3. The YLOD is a general hardware fault that can mean a lot of things. However, one of the problems is cracked solder that leads the PS3 to think one of its internal chips is not connected or is broken somehow. Cracked solder can happen when the chips get too hot (RSX most likely) and leads the motherboard to start bending, which may crack the solder. Changing the power supply (lower the average wattage going to the chips to lower the heat) and better thermal compound (heat dissipates faster to the heatsink) may prevent this error from occurring. However, if your PS3 has already had the YLOD, then you can reflow your motherboard every few months to keep it working (but it is not a permanent fix as the YLOD usually comes back).

you got the yellow light of death, you would need to reflux solder on the processors and reheat the solder, here is a link for the repair, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIm0Qk0CVTE&feature=related I suggest you take it to a pro if you feel you can not do it, you can mess up your ps3 if you don't do it right and taking it apart is a delicate job.

My playstation 3 wont turn on. the red light on

PS3 owners refer to this as the 'Yellow Light of Death' or 'YLOD'. It's quite common. The problem is caused by poor solder joints (due to overheating) on the motherboard and degrading heat sink compound on the fan.

My playstation 3 goes green then flashes yellow

What you are referring to is called the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD). This indicates a general hardware failure normally due to overheating. When these PS3's were produced Sony decided to use lead free solder. The problem with lead free solder is that it is not as flexible as leaded solder but it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly. When the console gets hot and cools down hairline cracks appear within these solder joints and a good electrical contact cannot be made. This then causes the console to fail. It could be on a number of different components including the CPU, GPU or memory. There is a temporary cure that may or may not work but ultimately the console will need to be repaired professionally or replaced. As it is out of warranty Sony will not replace it but will offer a refurbished unit for around £130. If you look on Youtube for Yellow light of death fix there is a way that you can re-heat the solder joints using a heat gun but if you are not confident taking apart electrical items then this really may not be something you want to try.

I am sorry I cant give you any better news but unfortunately it is a very common problem with the PS3.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

Power issue

When you start the Playstation 3 and it goes green to yellow to flashing red, this is due to an error with the Motherboard. Either there is some bridging in the soldering somewhere or the motherboard needs to be reflowed, due to bad solder connections. This problem is basically identical to the Xbox 360's "Red Ring of Death" issue that has been talked about quite a lot lately, which is supposedly caused by the Industry's switch to lead free solder.
Unfortunately I can't find anyone who has successfully reflowed a PS3 Motherboard, although I have found some people who have theorized about it. you can find that here

Your other options are to buy a working playstation 3 motherboard on ebay (approx. $120), send it to Sony (since these issues are not covered in the warranty for some reason, you will have to pay their repair fee of $160), or buy a new playstation 3. good luck AJ

Soon as turn PS3 on it goes orange then flashes red.

Its called the Yellow Light of Death. It can be repaired but what you need is an Infra Red BGA reflow of the solder on the PS3 graphics chip.
The best place in the UK to do it is:
