Yes, warm but not too warm that you can't lift it out to knead it. I beleive that the heat is part of the rising process for the dough. If you make it by hand you need to leave it to rise in a warm spot.

I have had a Panasonic breadmaker from Jan 2009 and it has been in regular use without problems. Recently on several occasions (not consecutive) the dough paddle has become detached during the mixing...

The kneading blade on the Panasonic bread makers is designed to fit loosely. If the dough is 'stiff' the kneading blade may stay in the bread when the loaf is removed from the pan. Allow the bread to cool completely before removing the blade carefully. Some types of flour absorb more water than others, so you can try adding an extra 10 - 20ml of water next time to see if this results in a slightly less 'stiff' dough.

This problem can also be caused if crust has built up underneath the blade. Make sure to wash the blade and its spindle after each use.

Trust this is helpful. Thank you for using FixYa!

My panasonic SD 255 breadmaker, after quite a lot of use, is now baking bread with a harder crust than it did in its youth. We can get a softer crust by using the Sandwich loaf setting but then we can...

You never said if you remembered to select the LIGHT Crust setting each time. Did you? Are you? If you ARE using the LIGHT Crust setting and finished loaves are still too dark, I would have to say it's time for a replacement breadmaker. Nothing lasts forever my friend. Besides, it sounds like you got your money's worth anyway, right?

I've owned over 200 breadmaker myself so you can bet that what I'm saying is true. Sorry for the bad news friend.

Hope this helps!

I have a panasonic sd 257 breadmaker and am having problems extracting the blade out of every loaf I make. It is making large holes in the loaves each time.

That is a problem with all breadmakers. The only way to prevent this is to remove the dough ball from the machine after the final punch down and just before the final bake. I've never done that but it might be a solution, but I have heard others talk about it. If you choose to leave the paddle in as I do then use a toothpick and poke around the outline of the paddle with it. You will still have a hole but it won't be as large. I sometimes use a popsicle stick too. Whatever you don't use anything metal to get it out if you have a metal paddle because you will scratch the non-stick surface on it.

Breadmaker will not allow me to select bread type.

I have one of these and when you turn it on you just keep pressing the "menu" button until the little arrow is next to the type of bread or dough that you wish to make. It sounds as if it may be faulty.

The paddle will not stay on the shaft while mixing dough.

Probably the paddle and shaft are worn. Both are replaceable. Buy a new Paddle and a Kneader mounting shaft unit (Part No. ADA 29A115)

Panasonic Parts
National Parts Center at 800-332-5368 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
